Three text editors that can replace Emacs and Vim

Vim and Emacs are obviously heavyweight in text editing on Linux desktops, but they are not the only choice.

Fans of Emacs and Vim, before you begin the editor competition, please understand that this article is not intended to belittle your favorite editor. I am an Emacs enthusiast, but I also like Vim.

That is to say, I think Emacs and Vim are not suitable for everyone. Maybe the competition between editors is naive, and many people are disappointed. Maybe they just want to have a less demanding modern editor.

If you are looking for an editor that can replace Emacs or Vim, continue reading. There are three editors that may interest you.

Geany

You can use Geany to edit LaTeX documents.

Geany is an old editor. When I run a lightweight Linux release on outdated hardware, Geany is an excellent editor. Geany started to be used for editing my LaTeX, but it soon became an editor for editing all my texts.

Although Geany is known as a lightweight and fast IDE (integrated development environment), it is more than just a technician's tool. Geany is lightweight and fast, and can run easily even on an outdated machine or a Linux Chromebook. From editing configuration files to maintaining task lists or logs, from writing articles or books to writing code and scripts, Geany can be easily competent.

The plug-in brings some extra charm to Geany. These plug-ins expand the Geany function to make it more efficient for you to code or process some Markup languages, and help you process text and even perform spelling checks.

Atom

Use Atom to edit web pages

In the text editor field, Atom comes and goes. In a short period of time, Atom won a group of loyal followers.

Atom's custom features make it so attractive. If you have some technical skills, you can set them in this editor at will. If you are not just addicted to technology, Atom also has some theme that you can use to change the editor's appearance.

Never underestimate thousands of Atom extension packages. They can expand Atom in different functions and convert Atom into a suitable text editor or development environment based on your hobbies. Atom not only provides services for programmers. It is also applicable to the writer's text editor.

Xed

Use Xed to edit an article

For user experience, Atom and Geany are slightly bloated. Maybe you only want a lightweight editor that is neither too simple nor too many features rarely used. In this case, Xed is exactly what you expect.

If Xed is familiar to you, it is because it is a branch of the Pluma editor in the MATE desktop environment. I found that Xed may be faster and more responsive than Pluma-but it varies from person to person.

Although Xed does not have so many functions, it will not be too bad. It has a solid syntax highlighting, slightly stronger than the general search replacement and spelling check functions, as well as the option card interface for editing multiple files in a Single Window.

Other editors worth exploring

I am not a KDE enthusiast. When I work in a KDE environment, KDevelop is my first choice in deep work. It is powerful and flexible, and does not have a large volume, much like Genany.

Although I have never liked it, I have used Brackets to feel it. It is very powerful and has to admit that its expansion is really practical.

Notepadqq, called "Developer's editor", is often reminiscent of Notepad ++. Although its development is still in its early stages, it seems promising at least.

For those who only need a simple text editor, Gedit is superior to Kate. It is by no means too primitive an editor-it has enough functionality to complete large-scale text editing. Both Gedit and Kate are named for speed and ease of use.

Do you have other love editors other than Emacs and Vim? For convenience, leave a message to share.
