A few of the best tuning tips for bringing Windows XP together

Before you change the registry, make sure that you have backed up the existing registry. That way, if something went wrong, it could be restored.

Backing up the registry is simple. Just open Registry Editor (click "Start" → "run", type regedit, click "OK"), then select "File" → "export" from the main menu. You can export a copy of the registry to any folder on the system on any hard disk. Exporting copies to the desktop is usually the easiest.

1. Click "Start" → "run", type services.msc, and click "OK". This will bring up the Services management console. Click the "Extensions" tab at the bottom of the window to list each of the backend services running on your computer. Windows makes a fairly detailed description of each service, and as long as you drag the description column to widen it, you can read each description in detail, or click on a service to read the full description in the left window.

2. Double-click a service to pull up a window with several options. In the Startup type area, you can set the service to always run automatically in the background, so that it can be used whenever necessary. You can also set up an adult worker run, which means that if an application needs the service, it must enter the service management console and re-enable it.

Users can also completely disable a service. In general, you need to disable services related to applications that are not or are rarely used, and/or attributes. Users can find detailed listings in the Windows XP Services Guide (http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm) written by Elder Geek, which lists the services that are appropriate for disabling.

If you log on to your computer as an administrator, you can pause a service (click on the "Pause" button in the "Service status" area below the "Startup Type" area) and watch the computer's health. Some of the risk signs include an application crash or other unusual behavior, such as slowing down, or being stuck after the system asks for a prompt. Tap Restore to enable the service again.

Tip 2: Lose Weight for System Restore

Although Windows ' System Restore is not perfect, it is the first step in helping a computer or hard disk recover from a major system error. However, it takes up more than 10% of the entire hard disk space capacity.

If users need a few more gigabytes of space, especially for secondary storage drives, there is an easy way to reclaim data space: Limit the number of System restore points created by Windows XP. This technique is simple and does not increase risk, no wonder many people like it.

1. Right-click on my Computer and choose Properties → System Restore.

2. If there is only one hard drive, skip to step 3rd. Otherwise, select the drive that you want to increase the storage space for, and then click the "Settings" button.

3. By moving the slider to the left and using less disk space, Windows XP reduces the number of System restore points.
