February 1 News, according to foreign media reports, Intel and the United States light technology Monday is expected to announce that the two companies will launch the world's first based on 25 nano-NAND flash technology chip. The 25-nanometer 8GB flash memory chip is still a sample and is expected to start mass production before the second half of 2010. As the smallest NAND flash technology currently in use, the 25 NM production process will significantly reduce the chip size compared to the 34 NM technology introduced in 2008. The two companies say the new generation process can produce 8GB of storage capacity on a single NAND chip that is smaller than a 1-penny coin in a 167-square-millimeter (round hole that can pass through the middle of a CD-ROM). Since this is a general-purpose flash chip, it can be used on any device that requires flash storage, such as digital cameras, MP3 players, and solid-state drives. Objective analysis in the study said that because the chip size is 167 square millimeters, a 300 mm processing plant each wafer can produce more than 400 chips. This will enable production costs to reach about 4 dollars per chip, or 0.50 dollars per gigabyte storage capacity. Since the price of NAND flash in 2009 has been about 2.00 dollars per gigabyte, and seems to continue to maintain this price in 2010, the 25 NM production process will bring the two companies a higher gross profit margin than the current 34 nm process. Currently, the cost of 34 NM is expected to be 1.00 dollars per GB storage capacity. "If a human hair is 1 miles wide, 25 nm is the equivalent of 21 inches," said Brian Shirley, vice president of technology at the Department of Memory Division, in Thursday, explaining 25 nanotechnology. This new flash technology is about a 34 of the size of the largest chip density, but the chip is the same size. This 25-nanometer chip supports the open NAND Flash Interface 2.2 Standard, with throughput of 200MB per second. The 25-nanometer chip will be produced by the joint venture IM Flash Technologies, which was created by Intel and the United States optical Technology in 2006. This cooperative enterprise is used in the creation of the 50 NM production process, and is now the third time to reduce the production process size. Author: Tianhong
