February 14 News, according to foreign media reports, Japanese server manufacturers NEC and China Lenovo will collaborate to manufacture and sell servers. Masato Yamamoto, head of NEC platform business, told Bloomberg in Tokyo that Lenovo and NEC would expand their PC-partner deals to enable them to sell servers in China. Yamamoto did not disclose the details of the matter. However, he said Lenovo's business was much smaller than NEC, as measured by server shipments. But Lenovo has a strong market in China, especially in government institutions. NEC has a broader portfolio of server products than Lenovo, he said. NEC will increase its server and system software sales by 6.5% to $5 billion over the next two years. As the El Reg Web site reported in late January, Lenovo and NEC formed a joint venture in the Netherlands known as Lenovo NEC, with 51% per cent of the company and 49% per cent of NEC. The joint venture combined the PC business of the two companies. Now NEC appears to be entering the explosive growth of China's server market. The quickest way to achieve this is to work with Lenovo.
