Parental controls in Windows Media Center

If your computer does not have a TV tuner, you need an optional analog or digital TV tuner to play and record TV in Windows Media Center.

When parental controls is enabled, you can only watch TV and movie content that is not more than the maximum rating allowed. Not all TV and movie content is graded, so you can also configure parental Controls to block unrated content. When parental control is enabled, you can specify access codes that are later used to access restricted content or to change parental control settings. It is recommended that you write down this code for future reference.

Please note that Parental controls cannot be used in all countries/regions. When you set parental controls to limit programs above a specific rating, you find that you can play a program whose ratings exceed the limit, possibly because the rating information transmitted over the TV signal is different from the ratings listed in the Guide. Windows Media Center uses the ratings in the TV broadcast signal to determine which programs to block. However, the rating information that you see in the Guide is downloaded from the Internet. In rare cases, the guide rating may not match the rating information received from the TV broadcast signal.

To set parental control steps

1. Click All Programs in the Vista Start menu, open Windows Media Center on the start screen, scroll to tasks (Figure 1 below), click Settings, turn to general, and then click Parental Controls.

2. You will be prompted to enter a 4-digit number to set up your code.

3. Do one of the following:

• To set parental Controls for your TV program, click TV Rating, and then click Enable TV Blocking.

You can set the maximum TV ratings that are allowed, including blocking all ratings, programs for ordinary audiences, programs that require parental guidance, and programs that specialize in adults.

• (optional) Click Block unrated TV to restrict unrated content.

If you want to adjust the rating settings for more control, you can also click Advanced. In advanced TV ratings, there are five areas where you can set ratings: fantasy violence, suggestive language, swearing, sexual content, and violence.

• To set parental controls for DVDs and movies, click Movie DVD Rating, and then click Enable Movie Blocking.

You can also click Block unrated movies to restrict unrated content while specifying the maximum allowed movie ratings.

• Click Save to save your changes.
