FPA to control the tilt of liquid crystal molecules, the use of Sony self-developed polymer membrane (with the film). Specifically, in the distribution of the main chain of the membrane with a higher molecular affinity with the liquid crystal and UV (UV) light hardening of the part. After the film is made into a liquid crystal panel, the UV light is irradiated under the condition of applying voltage to the liquid crystal Unit to harden the film. As the main chain of the film is hardened to a certain direction, the liquid crystal molecule (pre dip) is given without voltage. When the voltage is applied to the liquid crystal panel, the liquid crystal molecule will start to tilt at the same time, thus the high-speed response of the liquid crystal molecule can be realized.
But FPA also has a problem. Although the response speed of the liquid crystal molecule is increased when the voltage is conduction, the response speed of the liquid crystal molecule slows down. Therefore, it is easy to display a crosstalk phenomenon in 3D images, because there are obstacles in switching the display of the left and right eye images. There are also problems of leak phenomenon and decline of contrast.
Only give a preset angle to one side
The developed hybrid FPA only uses a forward dip film on the side substrate with liquid crystals. It is said that the response rate of the liquid crystal molecule is faster when the voltage is closed (Fig 1) than the original FPA, which is equipped with a forward dip film on both sides. Furthermore, the liquid crystal molecules are almost entirely vertically configured on one side of the substrate without a preset inclination, thereby reducing leak. This improves contrast compared to existing FPA.
In fact, the response time of the liquid crystal molecule is 3.2ms and the brightness of the black display is 0.42cd/m2 when the voltage is closed in the hybrid FPA trial unit, which gives the 1~2度 pre dip only on one side (Fig. 2 (a)). The thickness of the liquid crystal layer of Hybrid FPA trial Unit is 3.5μm. In general, the thinner the liquid crystal layer, the better the effect of the film, the faster the response of the liquid crystal molecules. It is said that the liquid crystal layer is only a trial-production unit of 3.2μm, and its response time has been increased below 3ms.
However, due to the hybrid FPA only give the single side of the substrate tilt angle, so the voltage conduction is slightly slower than the response speed FPA. Although Sony did not disclose the specific time of mass production of hybrid FPA, it will "consider cooperating with panel and material manufacturers" (Sony). With regard to the film, not as the original FPA of the use of self-developed products, but the use of Japanese JSR company developed with the joint film. JSR is one of the largest manufacturers in the field of film distribution, and the supply instability is less in production.
And about panel manufacturers Sony said, "Although not talk about the specific content of joint development, but can be directly based on the VA-style large-scale manufacturers of the process of manufacturing."
At present, the Korean Samsung Electronics, Taiwan Friends Optronics (AU Optronics) and Taiwan Chimei Electronics (Chimei Innolux) and other large LCD panel manufacturers, is the production of the "PSA (polymer sustained Alignment)" VA mode LCD panel. PSA is the UV-hardening monomer with the liquid crystal molecules into the panel, in the liquid crystal unit under the state of voltage irradiation UV light, so as to control the tilt of the liquid crystal molecules. If the monomer hardening is not sufficient, the LCD panel will easily appear spots. Hybrid FPA and FPA "do not use monomers, so don't worry too much about reliability reduction" (Sony).
