At the Red Hat 2013 Summit recently held in Boston, Red Hat CEO Wei heshi said that Red Hat was the first open-source software company in the industry to invest billions of dollars a year. In his keynote speech at the conference, he said openness is the key to innovation. He stressed that openness is not just a marketing slogan, but the only way for modern IT companies to survive.
"Open collaboration is a social technology that transfers our capabilities from client servers to the cloud computing social age," he said. "using closed models, you have to guess what the customer is thinking about, in this case, the idea is to build a car behind closed doors."
In his view, the new model for creating things is the wisdom of the masses. In the past one or two years, the industry has developed to a turning point. More innovations come from open-source communities, rather than traditional ownership communities.
Everyone may have a negative attitude towards the idea that open source can deliver progressive innovation. However, in the initial stage of the open-source era, incremental innovation is a convention. For example, many people begin to use Linux as a replacement product for Unix and MySQL and regard it as a progressive and innovative database.
With the emergence of the cloud, Wei heshi said that all core innovations come from open source, but there is an exception. Microsoft Azure.
As for why open source is becoming the source of innovation, rather than the past, we need to talk about technical capabilities, especially the ubiquitous broadband connection. Wei heshi said that this technology can now allow collaboration.
In the past, some people used to closely integrate open source with costs. This is a cheaper alternative than proprietary approaches. Now we should change this concept. Open-source collaboration is an innovative method that allows multiple competitors to work together to develop core functions, differentiate the value-added (such as support services), and highlight their own advantages.
Wei heshi said that most open-source users with strategic vision not only choose open-source because of cost, but also because open-source is more agile and flexible.
