I first learned about Debian4.0-Debian, a Linux release technology. For more information, see below. After the release of Debian 4, I spent some time testing Debian 4 on the i386 platform on vmware. I wanted to write something of the nature of the tutorial, which was troublesome and not very useful, write down this essay.
All of Debian4's software has 21 CDS (or 3 DVDs), plus businesscard, netinst, kde-CD-1, and xfce-CD-1. Businesscard is the smallest, only 32 M, can be burned on a business card-sized disc; netinst has 159 m, only contains the basic software package, suitable for network installation; the kde-CD-1 and xfce-CD-1 use kde and xfce as the default desktop environment, respectively, while the first disc (named debian-40r0-i386-CD-1.iso) uses gnome as the default desktop environment. I downloaded two iso files, kde-CD-1 and CD-1, and tested them separately. The process for installing the system using these two iso files is basically the same, only the default desktop environment for installation is different.
Use the iso file as the CD image to boot the VM from the CD. Press enter to start installation. By default, the 2.6.18 kernel is installed in menu mode. If installgui is input, the image mode is used for installation, this is the first time that the debian installer supports system installation in gui mode, using expert or expertgui for installation in expert mode. Use rescue or rescuegui to enter the rescue mode. However, the rescue mode does not support lvm very well. If the root file system is placed on an lvm volume, manual mounting is required.
You can select Chinese as the language used during installation. If the installation process uses Chinese and uses CD-1, the installer automatically installs the debian Chinese environment and Chinese font (although the font is not very nice), if the kde-CD-1 is used, kde Chinese environment is not installed.
During installation, you can use the "screen" or "Screenshot" button to save the current screen. The screen will be saved under/var/log. After the system is installed, you can check the installation process in this directory, but this function cannot be used to capture ongoing images, such as the hardware probe process and software package installation process.
The default locale in the Chinese environment is zh_CN.UTF-8, and supports zh_CN.GB18030, zh_CN.GBK, zh_CN.
During the installation process, you can use the partition Wizard to create partitions. logical partitions of physical disks, lvm volumes, and encrypted lvm volumes can be used as root partitions. This is the first time I saw encrypted lvm in the linux release version. After using encrypted lvm, every time I start the operating system, I need to enter the lvm password to access the system, in addition, when the disk is connected to another machine, you must enter a password to mount the logical volume in the lvm of the hard disk. This ensures the security of the hard disk data. The manual partitioning tool of Debian4 installer is not user-friendly, and the information organization is also messy. The partition information is displayed together with other operations. If you want to operate a partition, double-click the partition to configure the partition. We recommend that you select the wizard mode for partitioning if you are not familiar with linux partitions. You can select Ext2, Ext3, ReiserFS, JFS, and XFS as the root partition file system. The default file system is ext3.
A common user must be created during Debian 4 installation; otherwise, the installation fails. As in the past, the root user of Debian 4 cannot log on to the graphic interface through the Management Interface (GTM) and kdm by default.
During installation, you can choose whether to start popularity-contest to participate in the software package popularity survey. if you participate in this survey, the system will report the statistics of the most commonly used software packages to developers anonymously. These statistics will help debian developers decide to put those packages on the first CD.
You can select "desktop environment" and "Web server" in the software selection. By default, "desktop environment" and "Standard System" are selected, and separate software packages cannot be selected. If you use the expert mode for installation, you can select a single software package.
The vi of Debian 4 uses vim instead of nvi. Firefox is also renamed iceweasel.
