This topic and the Analysis Services upgrade and migration operation guide topics only focus on the upgrade and migration options unique to Analysis Services. However, these topics provide links to other topics to learn more about installing SQL Server.

Use the migration Wizard to migrate an existing Analysis Services Database
Start the migration wizard from the Analysis Services Server node in the Object Browser of SQL Server Management Studio. You can also run the program MigrationWizard.exe at the command prompt to start the wizard.

The Wizard starts and displays the "welcome to the Analysis Services migration wizard" page. Read the introductory message and click "Next" to continue.

On the "specify source and target" Page, identify the source SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Server and Instance name, and then identify the target SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services Server and Instance name. If the target server is not specified, you can save the database architecture to a script file and complete the migration later. You can use Analysis Services in the SQL Server 2008 Integration Services (SSIS) package to perform DDL tasks.

On the "select database to be migrated" Page, select the check box next to the database to be migrated. If you want to, you can specify a different name for the target database and the source database.

On the "verify Database" page, the wizard analyzes the database to be migrated and reports any problems found.

On the "migrate Database" page, the wizard reports the progress of the database migration.

On the "complete wizard" page, the wizard reports the migration results. Click Finish to complete the wizard.

After the database is migrated, you must process the database from the original data source before you can query the database.

After the migration, you may need to check the Analysis Services-multi-dimensional data for migration considerations to understand the differences between different versions of the Analysis Services Database.
