I implemented this effect under the default Human topic (Ubuntu 8.04). If you drive beryl now, I don't know if it will succeed.
Principle: the Ubuntu start menu icon calls the current topic (the size is 22x22 pixels ), in this example, the start-here.png file in/usr/share/icons/Human/22x22/places/is replaced by the start-here.png file.
Step 1: Back up start-here.png under/usr/share/icons/Human/22x22/places/(Copy + paste)
Step 2: delete, sudo rm/usr/share/icons/Human/22x22/places/start-here.png
Step 3: Copy your favorite image to/usr/share/icons/Human/22x22/places/placement. The image name is start-here.png in the format of png or svg (svg I have never tried, it should be OK)
Restart X and log on again. Do you see the effect?
