At present, IBM is trying to expand its POWER8 server product line as part of its continued efforts to launch a competitive product to replace Intel's x86-based server system.

Power8 chips and their server systems were first launched in April this year. One representative of the new system is the IBM Power s0000l server.

"Power s0000l is a dual-socket 4U-based server, different from the previous POWER8 series," said Steve Sibley, vice president of IBM Power systems.

IBM offers two different processor options for Power System s0000l: Two 10-core 3.42 GHz POWER8 processors or two 12-core 3.02 GHz POWER8 processors. The system supports up to 1 TB of system memory.

IBM introduced the Ubuntu Linux Operating System in Power Systems

Interestingly, the Power s0000l system initially only applies to Ubuntu Linux, not Red Hat or SUSE Linux. Sibley pointed out that IBM introduced Ubuntu Linux to the Linux operating system ecosystem of Power Systems in April 2014. He added that most IBM customers are free to choose Ubuntu, Red Hat, or SUSE, but s0000l servers are not in this scope.

"This is the first GPU-based product in Power System. Therefore, this product is only developed based on small-end Linux. Currently, it only supports Ubuntu," Sibley said. "However, by using Ubuntu, customers still have a choice-Ubuntu is a continuously growing Linux version for cloud computing environments ."

Power s0000l is configured with an nvidia gpu adapter slot through which customers can choose to deploy a GPU for additional processing capabilities.

"The purpose of this system is to introduce GPUs into the enterprise data center to achieve the growth of commercial workloads," Sibley said.

IBM positions its new system as a large data processing platform and a high-performance I/O processing platform.

"S0000l's system design uses a unique architecture to achieve optimal utilization of POWER8 processor's large data processing capabilities," Sibley said. "In the system design, in addition to optimizing the processor balance for large data workloads, we also focus on system-level IO functions, CAPI implementation, and memory ."

As part of the new POWER8 server, IBM has also released a feature called the IBM data engine. It provides a non-SQL data engine, including a Power SystemS822L with Redis database software, and an IBM Data Engine for analyzing applications, including platform computing software.

Before the PureSystems solution, IBM tied servers and software together.

"The IBM data engine is not replacing PureSystems," Sibley said. "IBM will continue to sell and support PureSystem products, including the product series for PureFlex, PureApplication, and PureData systems ."
