Kernel-based Virtual Machine virtualization technology is an emerging technology in the open-source community.

The Ubuntu server version of Canonical is the first major Linux release that provides a full-featured KVM virtualization stack. The RedHat Enterprise Edition Linux (RHEL: Ret Hat EnterpriseLinux) will be released one year later. If you are interested in this virtualization technology, you need to choose Red Hat or Ubuntu KVM?

Ret Hat and Ubuntu Operating Systems

Before answering this question, let's take a look at these Linux releases. RHEL is the main Enterprise Linux release version, which is used by the world's top 500 enterprises as their data centers. RHEL is used to run business-critical and high-performance applications, including Oracle databases and middleware Products and Red Hat Jboss production lines.

Ubuntu servers are very different from other products. According to a recent survey of Ubuntu servers released by Canonical, Ubuntu is still widely used in custom assembled PCs, especially web pages, emails, and database servers (such as traditional LAMP stacks ). In addition, Ubuntu has the potential to reach the enterprise level. However, the question is whether the management capability of Ubuntu KVM can meet the current critical period of enterprise level.

There is no difference in the underlying technologies of Red Hat and Ubuntu KVM virtualization. Red Hat acquired Qumranet. The company's business was to develop KVM, but KVM was originally an open source technology. All features developed by Red Hat will also appear in Ubuntu sooner or later, and vice versa.

Implementation of Red Hat and Ubuntu KVM

Red Hat and Ubuntu KVM virtualization are different in the best application scenarios. The basic topic of Ubuntu server is cloud computing, and the Ubuntu enterprise cloud supported by Eucalyptus System has been integrated into the 9.04 operating System.

Customers who require virtualization do not often need cloud services. Therefore, not every user chooses Ubuntu KVM. If you ignore cloud services, UbuntuKVM only provides some basic tools such as virtual manager and virsh, which can be used in the libvirt library. However, UbuntuKVM may not be the best choice for enterprise-level work environments.

On the other hand, Red Hat further develops the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization server version and the RedHat Enterprise Virtualization manager for server products to ensure the implementation of KVM. Use server-specific rev manager to manage Virtual Work platforms and compete with other management platforms, including Citrix system's XenCenter and VMware's vCenter servers. Rev provides high availability, dynamic migration, storage management, system scheduling, and other functions.

RedHat is also very active in developing new virtualization tools and technologies, such as oVirt-a webpage-based management platform for virtual work environments, libguestfs-a virtual machine image file system. Thanks to the emergence of these tools and the rev of the server product line, Red Hat took the lead in the KVM virtualization market.

Although Ubuntu KVM looks very promising, Red Hat is still the only KVM virtualization option that must be carefully considered due to the above advantages.
