I used to know that the serial line or the same line (market prices are about 5 yuan) can connect two computers, and can be composed of two-way peer-to-peer network, recently suddenly thought: The general computer has both serial and parallel port, then, if using a computer as a "bridge", so that its serial port to connect a computer, Let it connect to another computer, so that it might be connected to a three-machine peer network.
After countless experiments, my guess has finally become a reality: a serial port line, a connecting line with three computers--10 dollars in a triple machine! This is probably the cheapest three-machine equivalent Internet café in the world (Figure 1).

preparatory work
Select a computer that has a Windows 2003 system installed make sure it has a serial port and a combination port, select a Windows 98 computer with a port and a Windows 98 computer with a serial interface, and then connect the three computers in the structure shown in Figure 1, using a combined port and a serial port respectively.
To describe the convenience, the following Windows 2003 computer is called C machine, will connect the line of Windows 98 computer called a machine, will connect the serial line of Windows 98 computer called B machine.
This article will use the connection program is the Windows system with the "Direct Cable Connection", the program on the host side and client side, C machine should be set to the host side, A and B machines should be set to the client side.
Set Windows 2003 Server side
For Windows 2003 System (C-Machine), its "Direct Cable Connection" program has been integrated with the network connection, easy to set up.
1. Open Guest Users
(1) Right-click on "My Computer", select "Manage" to open the Computer Management window, and then select Users under Local Users and groups in the left pane.
(2) Double-click "Guest" in the right pane to open the related Properties window, remove the small tick before "account is disabled" on the General tab, and then press OK to save the exit.
2. Set up a Direct cable connection
(1) Right-click in the desktop's Network Places, select Properties to open the Network Connections window, and then double-click the New Connection Wizard icon to open the New Connection wizard window.
(2) in the "Network connection type" Step Select "Set advanced Connection", in the Advanced connection options step, select Connect directly to another computer, select Host in the host or guest step, select Communication Port (COM1) in the "Connect device" step, and other prompts to complete the new connection.
(3) Double-click the new incoming connection icon in the Network Connections window to open the corresponding Properties window. On the General tab, check the "communication cable between two computers (COM1)", "direct parallel (LPT1)", and "Show icon in notification area after connection" three (Figure 2).
(4) Go to the "User" tab, check all users who are allowed to connect to this computer, such as "Guest", and then click "OK" button to save the exit.
setting up Windows 98 clients
In Windows 98 systems (A and B machines), its Direct cable Connection program is a self-contained component of the system that is not installed by default, and is generally required to be added manually.
Tip: Windows 98 needs to read the appropriate installation files, whether you are adding a direct cable connection component or setting up network properties, so you must have a Windows 98 installation CD (or installer) ready before you do the following.
1. To add a direct Cable Connection component
(1) First double-click "My Computer → control Panel → add/Remove Programs" to open the related Properties window, and then go to the Windows Installer tab.
(2) Double click "Communication" to open the communication window, check "Direct Cable Connection", and then press the "OK" button two times according to the prompts.
2. Set Network Properties
(1) First double-click "My Computer → control Panel → network" To open the network window (or, in My Network Places, right-click, select Properties), and then go to the Configuration tab.
(2) At this point, you should add at least 4 components, such as Microsoft network users, dial-up networking adapters, TCP/IP, and file and Printer sharing on Microsoft Networks, in the list, which are recommended to add "ipx/spx compatibility Agreement" and "NetBEUI" 2 components (that is, a total of 6 components).
Tip: Because the direct Cable connection system automatically assigns TCP/IP property values, such as IP addresses, to all connected computers, you do not need to manually specify their contents.
(3) Go to the Identification tab and make sure that you have set up a unique computer name (for example, "Windows 98-a", B machine, "Windows 98-b") and a unified workgroup (assuming both machines are "Enanshan").
3. Set up a Direct cable connection
(1) In order to operate conveniently later, we recommend that you first select "Start → procedure → attachment → communication", then click on the "Direct Cable Connection" icon Right-click, select "Send To" "Desktop shortcut" to send it to the desktop.
(2) Double-click the Direct Cable connection icon on your desktop to open the Direct Cable Connection window, select Client in the "Specify the computer you are using" step, and then click the Next button.
(3) The remaining steps, for a machine, only in the "Select the port you want to use" one step to choose "parallel cable in the LPT1", for the B-machine, you just have to select the same step in the "string cable in the COM1", other according to the prompts to choose the default option.
(4) Then, in the Direct Cable Connection window, you will be prompted "waiting to connect through the parallel cable in the LPT1", if everything works, a "Direct Cable Connection Host" dialog box will pop up, at which point you need to enter the host's computer name (for example, "Wangyi") at the host name, and then click OK button to access the shared resources on the host.
the application of the network
After the connection was successful, the three computers formed a nearly "perfect" Peer-to-peer network: Access to two Windows 98 clients through IP addresses in Windows 2003 hosts, and mutual exchange of IP addresses between two Windows 98 clients; while two windows The Windows 2003 host can be accessed on 98 client computers by IP address and computer name.
Tip: The IP addresses on the three computers are automatically assigned by the "Direct Cable Connection" system, in the form of "169." 254. 118. 48 "may change after each reconnection."
Theoretically, the maximum speed of connecting line is 4Mbps, and the maximum speed of serial connection is 192kbps. In fact, in the author's network, transmission of a 1.4MB file effect is as follows: a machine to B machine, B machine to a machine, B machine to C machine, C machine to B machine is about 7 minutes 24 seconds, a machine to C machine, C machine to a machine is about 32 seconds. In other words, the data transmission through the serial line, 1MB about 6 minutes, if only through the parallel line for data transmission, 1MB time consuming less than 23 seconds.
