With the large-scale expansion of the "Broadband acceleration" and "light-in-copper retreat" projects of major operators, the broadband business will be dominated by multimedia, on-demand video, and interactive games in the future, high bandwidth and integration will become the criteria for judging the advantages and disadvantages of broadband products promoted by operators.

In the general trend of broadband network fiber-optic, PON technology has become one of the hot technologies that telecom operators around the world are paying attention, it is also the technical basis for operators to implement the "Broadband acceleration" and "Optical copper withdrawal" projects. In recent years, the association of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) the EPON standards initiated by the Organization and the GPON standards initiated by the Standardization Department of the International Telecommunication Union/full-service access network forum (ITU-T/FSAN) standards have become the mainstream of PON technology. According to the characteristics of Ethernet "simple and beautiful", EPON has the widest range of optical fiber access (FTTx) users in Japan, South Korea and other Asian regions with its mature industrial chain and excellent cost effectiveness; with the same characteristics as APON and BPON, The GPON standard is favored by many operators in Europe and North America.

Whether it is EPON or GPON, the upstream and downstream bandwidth is only 1G or 2G, but with the current interactive network TV (IPTV), High Definition TV (HDTV) and the development and popularization of Large-traffic and large-bandwidth services such as online games and video services. The bandwidth demand for each user is expected to increase by an order of magnitude every three years, from the analysis of the long-term development trend of operators in the future, the bandwidth demand for each user will be between 50 and ~ 100 Mbit/s. In this way, both EPON and GPON cannot meet the needs of future broadband business development, and the bandwidth of the existing PON port will have a bottleneck. Therefore, ITU-T, FSAN, IEEE, and other major standardization organizations began to study the next generation PON technology.

Similar to 1g pon technology, 10g pon technology is still divided into 10g epon and 10g gpon camps. Based on the IEEE 802.3av standard, 10 Gbit/s EPON adopts the content of IEEE 802.3ah to the maximum extent and has good upward compatibility. IEEE-defined 802.3av includes two core components: first, it expands the upstream and downstream bandwidth of 1g epon in the 802.3ah standard to 10G. Second, the compatibility with 1g epon is fully considered. When specifying the relevant physical parameters, the 10g epon Optical Node (ONU) is guaranteed) it can coexist with the ONU of 1g epon in the same Optical Distribution Network (ODN), and the configuration of this ODN can not be changed, which maximizes the carrier's initial investment. Based on the ITU-T G.987 protocol group, the 10g gpon defines a series of standards including the general features, the child layer of the physical media, the transport child layer and the management control interface, this paper proposes two 10g gpon architectures, asymmetric XG PON1 and symmetric XG PON2, and takes the lead in the formulation of asymmetric related standards. After more than two years of discussion and research, the draft standards have begun to take shape, and relevant product R & D work is also underway.
