In the following task, you will browse the Analysis Services tutorial cube and each of its dimensions to determine the type of change that needs to be performed to improve the functionality of the cube.

Browse deployed cubes
  1. Click"Customer"Tab or double-click Solution Explorer's"Dimension"Node"Customer"Switch to the dimension designer of the customer dimension, and click"Browser"Tab.

The "province/city/Autonomous Region name-region" User hierarchy is displayed in"Browser"On the toolbar of the tab"Hierarchy"List; the name of the current level "(all)" is directly displayed below the toolbar, and the individual members of the "(all)" level are displayed in the browser pane. By default, the name of a unique member at the "(all)" level is"All"And visible. For dimensions such as solution dimension, you can change or hide the name of this level. In Lesson 3rd, you change the Member names at the (all) level for several dimensions in the analysis services tutorial cube.

  2. In the "level and member" pane, expand "(all) "level " all " Members to display" province/city/Autonomous Region name "members. Expand Alabama Members of this level to display the "region" level. Expand the 280 member at the "region" level to view the member at the "customer" level.

In the "level and member" pane of the dimension designer, you can easily view members at each level in the user hierarchy designed by the cube wizard, so you can determine the required functional changes. Note the following: the "City/County" level is not defined for this level. The "region" level member is the dimgeography table key value, the "customer" level displays the customer's email address rather than the customer's name. You will modify this level in Lesson 3rd.

shows the expanded hierarchy in the level and member pane.

  3. On the toolbar of the "customer" dimension designer"Hierarchy"Select from the list"English country/region name"And then"Level and member"Expand in the pane"All"Level member.

It will be displayed"English country/region name"Attribute Hierarchy. By default, each attribute of a dimension has two levels of hierarchy: one is the "(all)" level, and the other is the level that contains each attribute member. The second level is the attribute name. In section 3rd, you will learn how to define a user-defined hierarchy based on the attribute hierarchy.

    Shown"English country/region name"The hierarchy of attributes.

  4. In Solution Explorer, double-click"Dimension"Folder"Time".

Then, open the "time" dimension in the dimension designer of Bi development studio.

  5. In the dimension designer of the time dimension, click"Browser"Tab.

The"Hierarchy"The user hierarchy calendaryear-calendarsemester-calendarquarter-englishmonthname-fulldatealternatekey is displayed in the list.

  6. Expand"All"Level members to display"Calendar year"Level member. Expand2003Member to display"Half calendar period"Level member. Expand1Member to display"Calendar quarter"Level member. Expand2Member to display"English month name"Level member. ExpandJuneMember to displayFulldatealternatekeyLevel member.

In Lesson 3rd, you will improve user friendliness by defining friendly names for the half and quarter and defining simple dates instead of dates that contain time values.

Displays the extended hierarchy for displaying the fulldatealternatekey attribute.

  7. click the designer tab of the Analysis Services tutorial cube to switch to the Cube designer in Bi development studio. Select the "Browser" tab, and click "reconnect" on the toolbar of the designer. You can also click the "Click here to try loading the browser again" link displayed in the middle of the browser pane .

the left pane of the designer displays the metadata of the Analysis Services tutorial cube. The perspective and language options are displayed on the toolbar of the browser tab.. Note that the "metadata" pane on the "Browser" tab contains two tabs on the right: the upper pane is the "filter" pane and the lower pane is the "data" pane.

the pane of the cube designer is highlighted.

  8. In the "metadata" pane, expand "Metric value" , "Internet sales" , drag the "sales" measurement value to the "data" "drag the total or detail fields here" pane" area.

note that this metric value is not displayed in standard currency format. In Lesson 3rd, you will learn how to modify the format of A Multidimensional Dataset metric value. For more information, see .

in the adventure works DW database, the sales value of each country/region is input in the form of local currency of each country/region. In Lesson 9th, you will learn how to convert the sales value into a unified currency.

  9. In"Metadata"In the pane, expand"Customer".

Note that all attribute hierarchies in the "customer" dimension are displayed in"Metadata"Pane."Customer"The dimension list also contains the "province/city/Autonomous Region name-region" User hierarchy. You can use any one or more attribute hierarchies to determine the dimension of a cube. However, for business users, the dimensions contain so many visible hierarchies at the same level, which may be difficult to browse. In Lesson 3rd, you will learn how to group these hierarchies into display folders for easy browsing.

  10. Set"English country/region name"Drag the Attribute Hierarchy"Data"Pane"Drag the row field here"Region.

Now you can view Internet sales by the country/region of each customer. Shows the process of determining a dimension.

  11. In"Metadata"In the pane, fold"Customer"And"Metric value", Expand"Product", Right-click"Product series"And then click"Add to column area".

Now you can view Internet sales by country or product series. However, you will see that each product series is represented by a single letter, rather than by the full name of the product series. In Lesson 3rd, you will learn how to add named computing in the data source view and modify attributes of this dimension feature to improve the user friendliness of product series names.

Internet sales by country/region and product series are displayed.

  12. In"Metadata"In the pane, fold"Product", Expand"Order Date", And thenOrder Date. calendar quarterDrag"Data"Pane"Drag the filter field here"Region.

  13. In"Data"In the filter field area of the pane, clickOrder Date. calendar quarterNext to the down key, clear"(All )"Check box next to, select"1"Next to the check box, and then click"OK".

You can view Internet sales for the first calendar quarter in the dimension determined by country/region and product series. However, you actually view the first calendar quarter value for each calendar year rather than any specific calendar year. In Lesson 3rd, you will learn how to use a combination key to uniquely identify each calendar quarter so that you can differentiate calendar quarters by year.

Displays Internet sales for the first calendar quarter of each year in the dimensions determined by country/region and product series.

  14. In"Metadata"In the pane, expandOrder Date. calendar year, And then expandCalendaryear.

  15. right-click the calendar year 2002 Member of the Attribute Hierarchy, click "add to subcube area" .

the order date is displayed in the filter pane above the data pane" 2002 members of a dimension, the value is limited to the value displayed in the "data" pane. This is equivalent to the WHERE clause in a multi-dimensional expression (MDX) query statement. For more information, see .

the value of calendar quarter 1 of Internet sales for each product series is limited to 2002, as shown in.

you have successfully browsed the Multidimensional Dataset created in the cube wizard, and it is now familiar with some elements in the analysis services Tutorial Project that may need to be modified to improve user friendliness and functionality.

download and install the updated example to obtain the complete project used in Lesson 2nd. For more information, see
