When you are composing a Word document, you often require different layout settings for different parts of the same document, such as setting different page orientations, margins, headers and footers, or reformatting columns. At this point, if you change its settings from page Setup on the File menu, it can cause all pages of the document to change.

Practical problems

A few days ago, a colleague asked me to help him. Set up a document layout, which consists of document A and document B, document A is a text section, a total of 40 pages, and requires portrait printing, document B includes several graphics and some large tables, requiring landscape printing. Also, document A and document B have different headers. Fortunately, he has already set the page format for document A and document B as required, only to insert document B into page 20th of document A, and to request that the page number be uniformly formatted.

Solutions

If you want to open document a first, position the insertion point at the beginning of the 20 page, and then do the insert file, as you normally do, the result is that document B is unrecognizable, that is, the page setup information for document B changes to the page formatting of document A. In this case, it is time-consuming and laborious to reset the inserted document B in document A, and to print document A and document B separately, it is hard to solve the problem of unifying the automatic page numbering. At this point, using Word's "section" feature, it is easy to solve the problem. The steps are as follows:

1. Open Document B and insert a section break at the end of the document.

2. Press the [Copy] button when all is selected.

3. Open document A and insert a section break at the end of page 19.

4. Position the cursor at the beginning of page A of document 20 and perform the paste operation.

A few notes

By doing this, the document B is completely inserted into document A, and both document A and document B retain the original page setup information, and the page number of the new document A is automatically rearranged with the content. The key to solving this problem is to insert a section break in the appropriate place in document A and document B, dividing the document into several different sections. The following is a description of the concept of "section" in Word and the issues to be noted when inserting a section break:

1. "section" is the largest unit of document formatting (or a range of typographic formats), and a section break is a "section" ending symbol. By default, Word treats the entire document as a "section", so the page setup for the document applies to the entire document. If you need to use a different layout within one page or multiple pages, simply insert a section break to divide the document into sections, and then format each section as needed.

2. Section breaks store formatting information for the section, and be sure to note that the section break only controls the formatting of the text that precedes it.

3. The steps to insert a section break are as follows:

(1) Click where you want to insert the section break.

(2) Click the Separator command on the Insert menu to open the Separator dialog box.

(3) In the section break type, select the type of section break you want, respectively: "Next page": The text after the section break begins on a new page; continuous: The next section is in the current page with the previous section; even pages: the content following the section break goes down to an even page; "Odd-numbered pages" : The content following the section break goes to the next odd-numbered page.

4. After you insert a section break, to make the page settings for the current section different from other sections, simply click Page Setup on the File menu, and in the Apply to Drop-down list box, select this section option.
