The switch is the most important network connected device of LAN, and the management of the LAN mostly involves the management of the switch. However, many campus network network management on the switch configuration is still very unfamiliar, today we talk about what is a network management switch? What can a network management switch manage?
What is a network-accessible switch
According to whether can network management, the switch is divided into the network management switch and can not network management switch. What is the difference between the two switches? Network-agnostic switches cannot be managed, and management is the management function of monitoring switch ports, dividing VLANs, and setting trunk ports through management ports.
But the network management switch can be managed, it has the port monitoring, divides the VLAN and so on many ordinary switches do not have the characteristic. Whether a switch is a network-accessible switch can be distinguished from its appearance. Can network management switch on the front or back generally have a serial port or the same port, through the serial cable or cable can connect the switch and computer, so easy to set.
The management of a network-managed switch can be managed by a number of ways: through the RS-232 serial port (or parallel port) management, through the Network browser management and network management software management.
1. Through the serial port management
The network management switch comes with a serial cable that is used by the switch. First one end of the serial cable plug in the switch on the back of the serial port, the other end inserted in the ordinary computer serial port. Then connect the switch and the computer power. HyperTerminal programs are available in Windows 98 and Windows 2000. Turn on HyperTerminal, and after setting the connection parameters, you can interact with the switch via a serial cable, as shown in Figure 1. This approach does not occupy the bandwidth of the switch and is therefore called Out-of-band Management (out of band).
In this mode of management, the switch provides a menu-driven console interface or command-line interface. You can use the TAB key or arrow keys to move through menus and submenus, press ENTER to perform the appropriate command, or manage the switch using a dedicated switch Management command set. Different brands of Switch command sets are different, even the same brand of switches, their commands are different. Use menu commands to make it easier to operate.
