TWM is short for tab window manager for the X Window System. It is a window manager. It was first published in April 1988 and is a very easy-to-use window manager. Unlike other X programs, xlib is directly used instead of any GUI components. The advantages of xlib are smaller and more convenient configuration. The so-called window manager is a special program that provides X programs with the following features: title rendering, window shadow, window icons, custom macros, mouse clicks, keyboard focus, scaling, and other functions.
Unlike gnome and KDE, it is not a desktop environment (de ). All the so-called desktop environments have a window manager. For example, the gnome of centos uses metacity, which integrates a large number of applications, including some very convenient system management tools, utility tools, games, etc., greatly facilitating the user.

TWM is a very simple xwindows, but it can run software such as Mozilla, GAIM, Konqueror that can only be used in the graphic interface. Try to execute these commands on the terminal console!
Click the left button on the desktop to bring up the menu. Kill is to terminate the process, and the term is the terminal console. showicomgr is the process icon list.

To start TWM, instead of gnome or Kde, We need to edit a. xinitrc file in the user's directory. Its content is as follows:
#! /Bin/sh
Xclock-geometry 70x70 + 5 + 5 &
Xterm-geometry + 200 + 200-FN 7x13-FG gray-BG Black &
Exec TWM

In this way, when you execute startx, it will only start TWM. The last line indicates that TWM is started, and the first two lines indicate other programs started, such as xclock. It is a clock program, and its parameters indicate the position and size of the program after it is started. Note that, except for the last line, the backend running flag must be added at the end of other lines, otherwise the subsequent programs cannot proceed. The last line is optional. You can put some common programs before exec TWM, which is the same as running Windows. After startx, you will find that TWM starts very fast, at least faster than gnome and KDE. Of course, this is unfair.

The desktop environment is as good as a thousand, but also has its shortcomings. For example, because of its huge size, it will be very slow when the system is started. In fact, we will not use many applications, at this time, you can choose to load only one window manager. In addition, you will find that almost all Window managers can be configured with RC files, and you can configure any settings within the permitted range. For example, the TWM configuration file is. twmrc. It is located in the user directory. When TWM starts, it will first find this file from the user's main directory. If it cannot be found, TWM will use a shared configuration file, generally, it is located at:/usr/x11r6/lib/X11/TWM/system. twmrc.
