Motivation

In the development process, there are often some debates about practical discipline, such as whether the failed build is the highest priority, such as whether to strictly abide by WIP limits. one side is the discipline of various practices such as XP and Kanban, and the other side is based on "The team should select its own process ", concepts such as "the process at the end of the project should not be the same as the process at the beginning of the project" and various amendments to the practice.

In addition, it is easy to argue about the daily development habits of the team. For example, if a dedicated workstation is used for pairing, can you put your personal computer next to it and change the pair frequency.

These arguments have an impact on the team's morale and efficiency. team members cannot work in a comfortable environment and rule. everyone thinks that some of other people's practices reduce team efficiency. the argument is still a relatively good result. At least the problem is exposed and the chance to be repaired is obtained. it is more tolerable, which is a long-term harm to individuals and the whole.

The problem here is that everyone in the team has a different understanding of each practice. each practice has its own premise constraints, applicability and subsequent impact. different teams have both the same problem and their own unique problems. many of the best practices are often configured by default, which are not discussed by the team. In fact, the Team accepts these rules passively and unconsciously based on the traditional and circle culture. as a result, it will also be unconsciously violated.

Solution

The argument is inevitable. What we need to do is to advance, rationalize, and make public. the team should select appropriate rules and practices based on their actual problems. as long as the team has a feedback mechanism and the problem changes over time, the practice will naturally be adjusted.

The initial selection should be conducted when all members participate in the initial stage of the project. in the end, a consensus should be reached, as a baseline, including various rules agreed by the team. the argument should occur in this process. once the decision is made, the team members should observe this baseline before the next discussion on this topic is adjusted. the final decision-making process may not be the decision-making process agreed by any team. As long as the team members can fully express their opinions, everyone can understand each other's ideas.
