Exercise 12, ArcMap cartography-map layout design
- Set map symbols-use of various rendering methods
- Create thematic maps using the ArcMap layout interface
- Add various map elements to the map layout
Tip: Always keep your map document in mind during the following exercises
Render layer Features-unique value symbols
Create a new map document in ArcMap, load [spatial analyst] extensions and [Spatial Analysis toolbar]
Load layer: [ provincial capital city, prefecture-level station, main road, border line, provincial administrative district, hillshade_10k], save the map document to
Under Ex12, the name is: Chinamap
Right-click the layer in the [Layer List panel] (TOC): [Provincial administrative], execute [Properties] command, in the [Layer Properties] dialog box that appears, click the [symbology] Options page, as shown in, the render parameter is set to: [Category--unique value, field value set to: DZM
] 。 Click the [Add all Values] button to remove the < all other values > front check box.
Click the Color box in front of all the other values and right-click to select the [properties of all symbols] command.
In the symbol selector, set [outline color] to [no color]:
Click the [Show-display] Options page to set the layer transparency to: [50%]:
Layer now: Provincial administrative districts are rendered with unique values based on field [DZM] and have pseudo-three-dimensional effects (all layers other than [provincial administrative districts] and [hillshade_10k] are closed)
Close and remove layers: [hillshade_10k]
Show layers: [Country boundary], right-click the layer in [TOC]: [Country boundary], execute [Properties] command, set render mode to in the [Layer Properties] dialog box that appears
[Single symbol], click the [Symbol Settings] button (e.g. 1)

Render layer features-categorical rendering
In the TOC, right-click the layer [provincial administrative Region],
Execute the [properties] command, and then, in the [Layer Properties] dialog box, click on the [symbology] Options page to set the rendering mode to:

Equal interval Classification rendering:
Sub-number classification rendering:

Render layer Features-point density rendering
Refer to the previous steps for a point density rendering of the layer: [Provincial administrative district], as shown in:
Calculate point density based on population field: Popu
Render layer Features-chart rendering
Refer to the previous steps for a point density rendering of the layer: [Provincial administrative district], as shown in:
Generate histogram rendering based on 1998GDP, 1999GDP, 2000GDP properties
Create a map layout
On the basis of the previous step, restore the layer [provincial administrative Region] rendering to [unique value rendering, based on the name field], as shown in:
In ArcMap, click the button to switch to the Layout view interface.
Execute menu command: [File]>>[page and print settings], set the paper size and orientation in the dialog box, please set the paper orientation to landscape (Chinese version of ArcMap translated incorrectly)
Once setup is complete, you can see that the map layout has become landscape and the current data frame has been added to the map layout under the Layout view interface.
The size and Position Options page in the current data frame allows you to precisely set the position or size of the data frame in the map layout. (In the Layout view screen, right-click on [Data frame] and execute
[Properties] command, open the following window)
