Beyond 11ac: Interpreting 802.11ad and 11ax

Recently, an international chip giant announced the launch of a three-frequency 802.11ad chipset. It is understood that the chipset will be the core component of a home wireless router, it will integrate 60 GHz 802.11ad technology with 5 GHz and GHz 802.11ac. It is a three-frequency access point chipset.

Now the question is, what is 802.11ad technology? The IEEE 802.11ad standard, also known as wiggg, shows its origins with 802.11 by its name. In contrast to the well-known 802.11n (working in the GHz and 5 GHz frequencies) and 802.11ac (working in the 5 GHz frequencies), 802.11ad works in the 60 GHz frequencies and provides a wireless transmission rate of up to 7 Gbps!

Of course, if you are familiar with 802.11ac, your friends know that, through 8x8 MIMO, 256 QAM modulation and channel binding 4 40 MHz channels, the 11ac standard theoretical wireless transmission rate can also reach 7 Gbps; however, you must know that the speed of 11ad reaches 7 Gbps, which can only be achieved through one spatial stream, 64QAM modulation, and a single channel. In addition, 802.11ad also has 11ac incomparable advantages in terms of capacity, power consumption, and latency. Especially in terms of latency, the latency is usually only 10 microseconds, comparable to wired!

However, 802.11ad also has its own "weakness ". We know that the higher the frequency band, the poorer the ability of the wireless traversing object. The difference can be seen from the 11ac working in the 5 GHz frequency band compared to the 11n working in the 2-4 GHz frequency band, therefore, the 11ad working in the 60 GHz band basically does not have the "Wall-crossing" capability. Therefore, the three-frequency product (802.11n/ac + 802.11ad) has become an ideal option for the next phase of wireless network devices.

Finally, we need to emphasize that 802.11ad is not the end because it works in the 5 GHz band, the 802.11ax standard with a wireless transmission rate of up to 10 Gbit/s has begun to expand (the IEEE 802.11ax specification development team began to set up the specification architecture in May, the first draft is expected to be completed in May, and the second draft will be completed in November 2014, and published 2019 in the First Half of 802. ax repair cases ).
