Windows 8 Consumer Preview was officially released in February, and then Windows Server 8 Beta also released the download. Overall, the hardware requirements of Windows 8 are not high, and the minimum hardware requirements are as follows:

    • Processor: 1GHz or faster
    • Memory: 1GB (32-bit) or 2GB (64-bit)
    • HDD: 16GB (32-bit) or 20GB (64-bit)
    • Graphics: Supports DX9 or higher

But some of the new features of Windows 8 require additional hardware requirements, and friends who follow Windows 8 should know that Hyper-V is also available in Windows 8 (Client), which can be seen as a Windows Server 8 Hyper-V Role Simplified version, which means that we will be able to run Hyper-V on the Windows Client platform.

To enable Hyper-V on Windows 8 (Client), the CPU must meet the requirements of SLAT(level two address translation, Second levels addresstranslation)! ( Note: This is a requirement for Hyper-V specific to Windows 8 Client )

SLAT is not required on Hyper-V in Windows Server 8, which explains a lot of netizens ' questions: " Why doesn't my CPU install on Windows 8Consumer Preview hyper-v?! "

What is SLAT?

When the program accesses the memory from the logical address to the physical address of the mapping, virtual environment is no exception is more complex, because the first mapping out of the "Physical address" or virtual machines under the virtual address, the virtual machine needs to be mapped to the actual physical address, which limits the speed of access.

And SLAT is "level two address translation", you can speed up the page table access! This new technology is available on both Intel and AMD processors, and two brands have different technical names for slat technology:

    • Intel's SLAT called EPT (Extended Page Table), Intel's core I7,i5,i3,pentium G6950 and most xeons processors support SLAT, while the Core 2 series and earlier processors Not supported!
    • AMD's SLAT is called RVI (Rapid virtualzation indexing) and the third Dai Haorong processor (code: Barcelona) supports this technology.

Microsoft-produced CPU detection tools!

If you cannot confirm the CPU model, you can use Coreinfo from Microsoft Windows Sysinternals to detect it. The Coreinfo tool is very simple to use and detects the technologies and features supported by the CPU, including, of course, the detection of SLAT.

Download coreinfo:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/cc835722

use of Coreinfo:

Running Coreinfo requires administrator status, so you need to start CMD as an administrator on a UAC-enabled system, and if you just want to detect SLAT, you only need to run:

Coreinfo.exe–v
