Most common options are stored in the Word Data registry key. (To view these options, click the Options on the Tools menu.) A common troubleshooting step is to delete the Word Data registry key. The next time you start Word, Word rebuilds the data key with the default settings. If you did not resolve the problem by deleting the Word Data registry key, go to step 2.
Note If you delete the Word Data registry key, several options for Word are reset back to their default settings, such as those on the File menu of the recently used file list. In addition, Word resets many of the settings that you customize in the Options dialog box.
Operation Steps:
To remove the Word Data registry key, follow these steps:
Quit all Office programs.
Double-click the Support Template shortcut on your desktop.
In the Support Template, click the Troubleshooter utility.
In the Microsoft Word Troubleshooter Utility dialog box, click the list of items that you selected, in the registry key for the data, and then click Delete.
When you receive the following message, click OK:
Hkey_current_usersoftwaremicrosoft Office11.0worddata
The file that backs up this registry key is located at:
c:docume~1usernamelocals~1tempwddata11.0
The registry key has been deleted.
Click Close.
On the File menu, click Out to quit Word.
Start Word in the usual way.
Be careful not to use the Support Template shortcuts on your desktop in step 8th.
If Word starts the program to run correctly, the problem is resolved. The problem is a corrupted Word data registry key. You may need to change several settings to restore the preferences in Word. If the problem is not resolved, restore your old Word Data registry entries. To perform this action, perform the following steps:
Quit all Office programs.
Double-click the Support Template shortcut on your desktop.
In the Support Template, click the Troubleshooter tool.
In the Microsoft Word Troubleshooter Utility dialog box, in the Select Item list, click the registry key for the data, and then click Restore.
When you receive the following message, click Yes:
Hkey_current_usersoftwaremicrosoftoffice11.0worddata
This entry exists in the registry.
Do you want to overwrite it?
When you receive the following message, click OK:
Hkey_current_usersoftwaremicrosoftoffice11.0worddata registry key
The restore operation was successful.
Click Close to close the Microsoft Word Troubleshooter Tool dialog box and exit Word.
