Comparison of multiple image formats

BMP: Windows bitmap
Windows bitmap can use any color depth (from black and white to 24-bit color) to store a single grating image. The Windows bitmap file format is compatible with other Microsoft Windows programs. It does not support File compression and does not apply to web pages. In general, the disadvantage of the Windows bitmap file format exceeds its advantages. To ensure the quality of the image, use PNG, JPEG, or TIFF files. The BMP file is applicable to wallpapers in windows.
Advantage: BMP supports color depth from 1 to 24 bits. The BMP format is widely compatible with existing Windows programs (especially older programs.
Disadvantage: BMP does not support compression, which causes a large file size. BMP files are not supported by web browsers.

PCX: PC paint brush
The "PC paint brush" image (also known as the Z-soft Bitmap) stores a single grating image in any color depth. Paint pictures are more widely used in earlier Windows programs and MS-DOS-based programs. Paint Brush images are compatible with many newer programs. The PCX image supports RLE internal compression.
Advantage: PCX is in standard format between many Windows-based programs and MS-DOS-based programs. PCX supports internal compression.
Disadvantage: PCX is not supported by web browsers.

PNG: Portable Network Image
PNG images store a single grating image in any color depth. PNG is a platform-independent format.
Advantage: PNG supports advanced lossless compression. PNG supports alpha channel transparency. PNG supports Gamma Correction. The PNG file can be staggered. PNG is supported by the latest web browser.
Disadvantage: Older browsers and programs may not support PNG files. As an Internet File Format, PNG provides less compression than JPEG compression with loss. As an Internet File Format, PNG does not support multiple image files or animated files. The GIF format supports multiple image files and animated files.

JPEG: Joint photography expert group
JPEG images store a single grating image in 24-bit color. JPEG is a platform-independent format that supports the highest level of compression. However, this compression is lossy. Gradient JPEG files can be staggered. It can increase or decrease the level of JPEG file compression. However, the file size is at the cost of image quality. The compression ratio can be up to: 1. (The JPEG format allows you to easily compress files at a ratio of to, without compromising the image quality .) JPEG compression can well process realistic photography. However, JPEG compression cannot provide ideal results for simple works with a small color, strong contrast level, solid border, or a large solid color area. Sometimes, the compression ratio is as low as, seriously compromising image integrity. The cause of this loss is that the JPEG compression scheme can well compress similar tones, but the JPEG compression scheme cannot well handle the strong Brightness Difference or the solid color area.
Advantage: photographic or realistic works support advanced compression. The variable compression ratio can be used to control the file size. Supports interleaved (for gradient JPEG files ). JPEG supports Internet standards widely.
Disadvantage: lossy compression will reduce the quality of original image data. When you edit and re-save a jpeg file, the quality of the original image data is decreased. This decline is cumulative. JPEG is not applicable to simple images with very few colors, areas with similar color blocks, or with very obvious brightness differences.

GIF: Graphic Interchange Format
A GIF image uses 8-bit color or 256 color to store a single grating image data or multiple grating image data. GIF images support transparency, compression, crossover, and multi-image (animated GIF ). GIF transparency is not Alpha transparency and does not support translucent effect. GIF compression is LZW compression, and the compression ratio is about. Animated GIF files are supported in gif89a.
Advantage: GIF supports Internet standards widely. Supports lossless compression and transparency. Animated GIF is very popular and easy to create using many animated GIF programs.
Disadvantage: GIF only supports a 256-color palette. Therefore, the color information is lost for detailed images and realistic photos, but it looks like it is color-coded. · In most cases, lossless compression is not as effective as JPEG or PNG. GIF supports limited transparency, with no translucent effect or fading effect (for example, the effect provided by alpha channel transparency ).
