Data protection policies under Vista: Shadow copies

Data security is important for the security system as a whole. What if our data is lost? That's right! With such tools as Ghost, you can recover quickly. But what if we want to restore the modified file? If you choose Windows Vista Ultimate or Business version, you can do it with a shadow copy.

Shadow Copies (Shadow copies) are a new concept. The popular point is that the previous version of the file. The previous version of the file has been stored in the System Restore point or backup file as long as the user has set up the System Restore function or made a backup of a file. If the files are modified or deleted, they can be restored using these older versions. Note, however, that shadow copies are still different from System Restore: It does not restore the files that Windows is running correctly.

First log into the system as a system administrator, and then turn on the System Restore function for the partition where the file resides. Open the User Account Control dialog box, open the System Restore window, go to the System Protection link, and select the disk on which System Restore is turned on in the automatic restore points list.

We know that traditional system backup is a general-purpose backup, which is more flexible, regardless of file form collection, and shadow copies can choose the type of file they want to back up. Next, go to backup and Restore center and click Back up files. Select the device that saved the backup, and click Next.

In particular, we need to remind you that the backup hard disk partition cannot be in the same partition as the source file to be backed up, for example: you want to back up the files in the F partition, and the partition that holds the backup can only select partitions other than F.

Select the disk that contains the files you want to back up, and click Next. Select the type of file you want to back up, and then set the date and time that the system automatically backs up so that the system can update the files in a timely manner. You will be able to use the shadow copy feature to recover these files later. Note that Vista can only back up files and folders in the NTFS file format partition, and that the backed up files do not include system files, executables, and temporary files.
