I. Guiding Words of sentence clauses

The words that guide the sentence clauses usually have the words that, whether, the connected pronoun and the connected adverbs.

1. Guided by that

We heard the news that our team had won. We heard that our team won.

They were worried over the fact that you were sick. They worried about your illness.

The news that we are having a holiday tomorrow is not true. The news of tomorrow's holiday is false.

I 've come to the conclusion that it was unwise to do that. I come to the conclusion that this is unwise.

The fact that the money has gone does not mean it was stolen. The fact that the money was lost does not mean that it was stolen.

He referred to Copernicus 'Statement that the earth moves round the sun.

[NOTE 1] The acronyms behind certain terms (such as demand, wish, suggestion, and resolution) should be in a virtual tone. For example:

They were faced with the demand that this tax be abolished. They face the need to abolish this tax.

They expressed the wish that she accept the award. They said they wanted her to accept the bonus.

There was a suggestion that brown shoshould be dropped from the team. One suggestion is that Brown should leave the team.

The suggestion that the new rule be adopted came from the chairman. The Chairman proposed the adoption of the new rule.

The resolution that women be allowed to join the society was carried. The decision to allow women to join the association was passed.

I can understand their eagerness that you shoshould be the main speaker. I understand the ardent mood they want you to be the main speaker.

[NOTE 2] The conjunction that guides the sentence clause is generally not omitted, but can be omitted in informal style. For example:

He gabbed his suitcase and gave the impression he was boarding the Tokyo plane. He picked up his suitcase and gave the impression that he was about to fly to Tokyo.

2. Guided by whether

There is some doubt whether he will come. It's not certain whether he will come.

Answer my question whether you are coming. You answered my question: you cannot come.

The question whether it is right or wrong depends on the result. Whether this is true or not depends on the result.

We are not investigating the question whether he is trustworthy. We are not investigating whether he can trust it.

[Note] whether can guide the sentence clause, but if it cannot guide the sentence clause.

3. Guided by the connected Pronoun

Have you any idea what time it starts? Do you know when to start?

From 1985-90 I was an attacker uctor at the regional party headquarters. after that I went back to work in a factory. then I had no idea what a casino was. from 1985 to 1990, I was a member of the local party department. Then I went back to work in a factory. I didn't know what the casino was like.

4. Guided by the connected adverbs

I have no idea when he will come back. I don't know when he will be back.

It is a question how he did it. That's a question about how he does it.

You have no idea how worried I was! You don't know how worried I am!

Ii. Separation of sentence clauses

Sometimes the sentence clauses can be separated from the nouns of the same place. For example:

The news got about that he had won a car in the lottery. The message said he had won a car.

The rumour spread that a new school wocould be built here. It is rumored that a new school will be built here.

Ii. Differences between sentence clauses and attribute clauses

1. Different meanings

A noun clause is used to describe the specific content of a modified term. It can be equal to a modified word. An Attribute Clause restricts the modified term, its role is to distinguish the modified Nouns from other similar things:

We are gglad at the news that he will come. We are very happy to hear that he is coming. (The content of news is that he will come, so that guides the sentence clauses)

We are gglad at the news that he told us. We are very happy to hear the news he told us. (That clause restricts the content of the news, that is, we are happy because the news he told is not other news, so that clause is an Attribute Clause)

2. Different boot words

What, how, if, whatever, and so on can guide noun clauses, but do not guide attribute clauses.

3. different functions of the guiding word

That when guiding a sentence clause, it does not act as a sentence component. When guiding an Attribute Clause, it acts as a relational pronoun, either as the subject of the Attribute Clause or as the object of the Attribute Clause. In the above example, that in he told us serves as the object of told.

4. Differences between modified words

The nouns modified by the sentence clauses are relatively limited, including hope, wish, idea, news, fact, promise, opinion, suggestion, and truth, the nouns modified by attribute clauses are very extensive. In addition, when the WHERE clause is guided by the when and where clause, it is usually used to modify the nouns that indicate the time and place, but they are not necessarily used to guide the clause. For example, when the WHERE clause is guided, it usually only modifies the reason, but it does not necessarily guide the sentence clause:

I have no idea when they will come. I don't know when they will come. (Sentence clause)

I'll never forget the days when I lived there .. I will never forget the days I live there. (Attribute Clause) (from www.hxen.com)

We don't understand the problem why this is the best choice. We don't understand why this is the best choice. (Sentence clause)
