This problem occurs on the kernel of 4.4 (see Kernel with command: UNAME-R) and requires three actions:
1.sudo Apt-get Install Open-vm-tools
2. Installing the kernel:http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.6-yakkety/4.6
For example, I am a 64-bit processor, corresponding to the AMD64 file below, open the console, open a read-write folder, and then do the following:
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.6-yakkety/linux-headers-4.6.0-040600_ 4.6.0-040600.201606100558_all.deb
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.6-yakkety/linux-headers-4.6.0-040600-generic_ 4.6.0-040600.201606100558_amd64.deb
wget Http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.6-yakkety/linux-headers-4.6.0-040600-lowlatency_ 4.6.0-040600.201606100558_amd64.deb
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.6-yakkety/linux-image-4.6.0-040600-generic_ 4.6.0-040600.201606100558_amd64.deb
wget Http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.6-yakkety/linux-image-4.6.0-040600-lowlatency_ 4.6.0-040600.201606100558_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg-i *.deb
3. Restart
