Problem:
What is 1:ISTG?
2: How do I determine the ISTG role?
What role does 3:ISTG have?
4: How to run the KCC on ISTG to generate a topology between sites.
What is the problem 1:istg?
Applies to:windows Server, Windows server R2
The intersite topology Generator (ISTG) is the domain controller at each site, which is responsible for generating the Inter Site topology. (The intersite topology generator ISTG is a domain controller at each site that is responsible for generating the topology between sites). This shows that one of the functions of ISTG is responsible for generating the topology between sites. But there are people who say that KCC is responsible for generating the topology between the sites, which is actually possible, because we are going to run the KCC on the ISTG domain controller to generate a replication topology between sites, as described in question 2, If you want to regenerate the intersite topology, you must determine the identity of the ISTG role owner in a site.

Question 2: How do I determine the ISTG role?
If you want to regenerate the intersite topology, you must determine the identity of the ISTG role owner in a site. (If you want to generate inter-site topologies, you must determine the identity of the ISTG role holder in the site.)
You can use this procedure to view the NTDS site Settings object properties and determine the ISTG role owner for the site .
(You can use this procedure to view the NTDS Site Settings object properties to determine the holder of the ISTG role in the site)
Membership in Domain Users, or equivalent, was the minimum required to complete this procedure. Review details about using the appropriate accounts and group memberships at Local and Domain Default Groups (HTTP://GO.MI crosoft.com/fwlink/? linkid=83477).
To determine the ISTG role owner for a site
Open Active Directory Sites and services:on the Start menu, point to administrative Tools, and then CLI CK Active Directory Sites and Services.
In the console tree, click the Site object whose ISTG role owner of want to determine.
In the details pane, right-click the NTDS Site Settings Object, and then click Properties. The current role is owner appears in the Server box under inter-site Topology Generator.

We can also use the Repadmin command to display a domain controller with a ISTG role in the site, Repadmin/? Just show some basic commands, and REPADMIN/EXPERTHELP will show help for advanced commands

What is the role of 3:ISTG?
ISTG is used for replication between sites ie intersite replication. It selects the bridge Head server automatically which willl be authorised to replicate information to other bridge head SE RVer of other site. If The bridge head server goes due to ISTG a new server takes it place and administrator need not to intervene And there is no problem in replication.
ISTG is used for two inter-site replication, i.e. intersite replication. ISTG automatically selects the bridgehead server, which (picked as the bridgehead server) is granted a bridgehead server that replicates information to other sites. If the bridgehead server fails, the administrator does not need to intervene because ISTG a new server will take over the bridgehead server, and there is no problem with replication.

Issue 4: How to run the KCC on ISTG to generate a topology between sites.
Generate the Replication topology on the ISTG
Applies to:windows Server, Windows server R2
You can use this procedure to generate the intersite replication topology on the Intersite topology Generator (ISTG). The Knowledge Consistency Checker (KCC) generates the Active Directory replication topology on every domain controller. The KCC runs by default every minutes.
You can force the KCC-to-run on any domain controller. The topology that's generated depends on the domain controller on which you run the command. You can force the KCC to run as follows:
To generate the intersite replication topology, run the KCC on the domain controller in the site that holds the ISTG role. (The KCC is running on a domain controller that holds the ISTG role in the site, generating a replication topology between sites)
To generate the Intrasite replication topology, run the KCC on any domain controllers in the site that does don't hold the are TG role. (Running the KCC on a domain controller for non-ISTG role holders in the site, generating a replication topology within the site)
To generate the replication topology in the ISTG, you must first complete the Procedure:determine the ISTG Role Owner for A Site.
Membership in Enterprise Admins, or equivalent, was the minimum required to complete this procedure. Review details about using the appropriate accounts and group memberships at Local and Domain Default Groups (HTTP://GO.MI crosoft.com/fwlink/? linkid=83477).
To generate the replication topology on the ISTG
Determine the server that holds the ISTG role for the site.
Open Active Directory Sites and services:on the Start menu, point to administrative Tools, and then CLI CK Active Directory Sites and Services.
The console tree, expand Sites, and then expand the site that contains the ISTG on which you want to run the K Dci
Expand Servers, and then click the Server object for the ISTG.
In the details pane, right-click NTDS Settings, click All Tasks, and then click Check Replication to Pology.
In the Check Replication topology message box, click OK.
