Differences between vsphere 5.0 and vsphere 4.x
Vsphere5.0 is a major upgrade based on vsphere4.0,The following changes made on the basis of vsphere4.0 will affect the installation and setting of vsphere.
Removed the service console.
Esxi does not include the service controller. You can use the esxcli command in the esxi shell, the vcli command, and VMWare powercli to execute most tasks in the service console.
Esxi does not have a graphical installer
The graphical installer depends on the service console, while esxi does not include the service console. esxi retains the installation program that is basically text.
Vsphere auto deploy and vsphere esxiimage builder CLI
Before esxi 5.0, esxi is installed on the physical disk of each esxi host. With esxi 5.0, you can use vsphere auto deploy to directly load the esxi image to the memory. You can use the vcenter server to effectively backup and reset a large number of esxi hosts, or you can use the image configuration file to manage esxi updates and patches. You can save host configurations (such as network or storage settings) as host configuration files and apply them to hosts using auto deploy. You can use esxi imagebuilder CLI to create an esxi installation image with a custom set of updates, patches, and drivers.
Esxi installation and upgrade process changes
Esxi 5.0 uses the single installer wizard for completely new installation and upgrade. Esxi 5.0 also supports
Vsphere auto deploy is a new option for deploying esxi directly to the host memory. Esxi 5.0 is not supported
The vihostupdate and esxupdate utilities are supported. No command line utility can be upgraded
Or migrate to esxi 5.0. After upgrading or migrating to esxi 5.0, you can use vcli esxcli
Upgrade or repair the esxi 5.0 host
Note: After the host is upgraded or migrated to esxi 5.0, you cannot roll back to ESX 4.x.
Or esxi software. Back up your host before performing the upgrade or migration, so that the upgrade or migration fails.
The 4.x host can be restored.
Installer Cache
Any data bit used during boot will be cached in the system, instead of using a binary image for installation.
System. This cache reduces installation problems caused by access to installation files between networks with loads
Note:
Script-based installation cannot perform PXE boot on the server and then obtain it from other media

Changes in host Disk Partitions
All newly installed hosts in vsphere 5.0 use the guid partition table format instead of the msdos partition label. This change allows you to install esxi on a disk larger than 2 TB. The newly installed vsphere 5.0 host uses vmfs5, which is an updated version of VMware filesystem in vsphere 5.0. Unlike earlier versions, esxi 5.0 does not create a vmfs partition on the second disk and subsequent disks. The upgraded system does not use the guid Partition Table (GPT ), however, the old version of the msdos style partition label will be retained. The host disk partition changes.
