Establish a DHCP server step by step

In a network that uses the TCP/IP protocol, each computer must have at least one IP address in order to communicate with other computers. In order to facilitate the unified planning and management of IP addresses in the network, DHCP (Dynamic Host Configure Protocol, dynamically hosted Configuration Protocol) came into being. This kind of network service is advantageous to manages the client IP address effectively in the campus network, but does not need one one manually to specify the IP address.

Installation of DHCP service

DHCP refers to a range of IP addresses controlled by the server, which automatically obtains the server-assigned IP address and subnet mask when the client logs on to the server. First, the DHCP server must be a computer with a Windows Server/advanced Server system installed, and secondly, the computer that holds the DHCP server needs to install the TCP/IP protocol and set up a static IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and so on. By default, DHCP as a service component of Windows Server is not automatically installed by the system and must be added in:

1. Click "start → settings → control Panel → add/Remove Programs → add/Remove Windows Components" to open the corresponding dialog box.

2. Click the "Network Services" item in the Components list box of the selected dialog box with the left mouse button and click the Details button to have a dialog box with specific content.

3. Select Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) in the Sub-component list box of the Network Service in the dialog box, click the OK button, put the Windows 2000 installation CD-ROM on the ScreenTip, and copy the program you want.

4. After restarting the computer, a "DHCP" entry appears under start → programs → administrative tools to indicate that the DHCP service was installed successfully.

Authorization of the DHCP server

For network security management, it is not possible to use the DHCP feature when it is installed in Windows Server, and authorization is required, and an unauthorized server cannot provide the DHCP service. The procedure for authorizing a DHCP server is as follows:

1. Click "Start → program → admin tool →dhcp" to open the DHCP console window.

2. In the console window, click to select the server name with the left mouse button, and then click the right button, select "Authorize" in the shortcut menu, it will take a few minutes of waiting time. Note: If the system does not respond for a long time, you can press the F5 key or click "Refresh" under "Action" in the menu tool to refresh the screen, or close the DHCP console first, and right-click on the server name. If authorization on the shortcut menu has changed to revoke authorization, the authorization to the DHCP server is successful. At this point, the most obvious mark is the server name in front of the red up arrow into the green downward arrow. In this way, this authorized DHCP server has the right to assign IP.
