I have been using trados for a short time. It can be said that I am a newbie. However, I have mastered this tool in a short period of time, indicating that it is not so mysterious and not so unfathomable. Here, I will talk about how to learn it. I will talk less about some content in my forwarded articles. I will talk about the content that is not mentioned or emphasized by others.
1. trados is not a machine translation software, but a translation memory software.
When it comes to translation software, many people will think of translation software such as Kingsoft fast translation and Oriental Express. Although these software has a certain market and some people are excited about them, I am not optimistic about them. These translation software is characterized by inputting English or Chinese into its input interface, so that the translation can be obtained immediately. However, this can only be a layman. Anyone who knows a little about a foreign language can see that its translation is not right. Once I translated a piece of computer information using Kingsoft's quick translation. It translated the library into a library, and there were still many inexplicable errors. I don't need this kind of software anymore. Even if it is used occasionally, it is only a reference for translation.
Trados is a computer-aided translation (CAT: Computer Aided Translation) software, also known as the translation memory (Tm: Translation Memory) software. What is translation memory? In short, the interpreter's work is stored with tools provided by trados and stored in two major databases (Memories, one is sentence embedding (made using winalign), and the other is the glossary (multiterm ). When performing translation, trados will remind you that the same sentence is called 100% exact match in trados, automatically Insert the translation. You will not need to translate it for the second time. Similar sentences use a method called fuzzy match to provide a reference translation for the interpreter to select and modify. For numbers, abbreviations, dates, time, and measurement units, trados can be automatically replaced. For example, if the existing sentence contains April 20, 2004, a date (May) appears in the translation) will be automatically replaced with May 3, 2005.
2. To work with trados, you must have a sentence library and a glossary.
Some people know that trados can improve their work efficiency and accuracy. He does not know that without a sentence library or a glossary, it is neither possible to improve work efficiency nor to make the translation accurate. This is because the translation and memory software has not been widely known in China. I think that with it, it will be a great deal. This is a fuzzy understanding, which must be clarified by the author.
In foreign countries, many translation companies and enterprises use trados (in Germany, there is also a widely used translation and memory software called Transit). While they require you to use trados translation, you will also be provided with reference text (that is, sentence) and glossary. The biggest benefit of using the translation memory software is that it allows many translators to work simultaneously over the network. They can share the glossary online, and the translations of one interpreter can be used for reference by others, achieve efficient synchronization of multiple users.
Trados has another advantage: when translating long documents, you can use the related search (concordance) to find the same or similar part as the previous one) search for terms and sentences that have been translated in the memory. Do not do this job. trados is automatically completed. During the translation process, you have automatically stored the words, terms, and sentences you have translated.
3. Create a sentence Sequence
Trados has two important tools, one of which is winalign. Many articles about trados ignore the tool winalign, which only introduces trados and multiterm. In fact, winalign is more important than multiterm in trados. Its function is to make a sentence. After translating some documents, you must never stick to it. Instead, it takes some time to use winalign to make a sentence. This work seems simple and actually very important.
Creating a sentence with winalign requires an original article and a more accurate translation. If you are in a hurry during translation and some translations are not accurate enough, I suggest you repeat these translations when you are free. There are two columns in winalign: one is the original text and the other is the corresponding translation. The winalign task is to align the original and translation respectively. The original text and the translated text should be stored in the RTF format of the Word documents. Word allows users to input and output a file in special RTF format. You only need to select the "Save as" command and select "RTF format" in "Save type. Rich Text Format is short for Rich Text Format and uses it as the extension of the format file. The RTF file format is created by Microsoft Word. It is designed to transfer data between different programs. One of its advantages is that the file format information will not be lost or damaged. The RTF format is used in winalign to align sentences by recognizing these formats.
Sometimes automatic alignment cannot produce good results, and manual alignment is required. Manual alignment mainly uses the following menu items: Under the edit menu of winalign, there is a split segment item, an edit segment item, and a join segment item, under the alignment menu of winalign, there is a file pair Statistics item, a commit item, and a mark finished item. After automatic alignment, use the File pair statistics menu to check the alignment results of file pairs. You may find that there are several high quality units matching results, there are several medium quality units matching and several low quality units matching. In my experience, a small number of low quality units matching does not affect the final use effect. Of course, the more high quality units matches, the better. There is also an item number of and units, which indicates that the sentence between the original text and the translation corresponds to and. In my experience, it is best not to have a or correspondence between the original and the translation. The method is to use the split segment Item mentioned above to split the sentence or use join segments to merge the sentence. Finally, we recommend that you use a sentence of in the statistical result. The Edit segment item is used to modify the translation during align. If you are satisfied with the align results, don't forget to use commit for confirmation. If you do not confirm the translation, garbled characters or vertical Chinese characters will appear in the related columns of trados workbench when you use trados for translation.
Some people may think it is too difficult to get bored with the above, which is the cause of problems.
4. Create a glossary
Another important tool of trados is multiterm. Many articles have introduced how to create a glossary. I have several questions:
(1) Sources of terms
You can find 24 dictionaries translated by Kingsoft on the Internet. These dictionaries are arranged in the tab format and can be used as a Chinese-English/Chinese-English glossary library based on your needs.
(2) The size of the glossary
In my experience, the glossary cannot be too large or too small. Someone once asked me whether to put all the terms together. My answer is inappropriate. If it is too large, the running speed slows down. If it is too small to be used, it takes a lot of time to switch between the glossary. Generally, similar majors can be put together, such as mechanical and automotive majors.
(3) multiterm 5 Glossary Import
In addition to the methods described in the cited articles, you can also find a software named trados dictionary on the Internet, it makes it very easy to make the glossary in the format of comma, tab, space, or contrast text into a format that can be directly input to multiterm 5.5, as a multiterm 5 Glossary.
(4) create a multiterm IX Glossary
Then, use the migration tool (migration tool) to migrate to the multiterm IX Glossary in XML format. However, I failed to import the XML file after migration in Windows XP. In the same way as Windows 98, the file cannot be imported into the multiterm IX glossary. In the end, I had to spend a whole day on Windows 98 to enter more than 20 thousand words. If any of you have successfully imported data in Windows XP, please advise.
