What is RAW format?

In addition to being able to store images in JPEG, TIFF format, many digital cameras can also be stored in RAW format. In fact, Raw is not an image format, but the camera CCD or CMOS in the light signal conversion to electrical signals when the level of the original record, simply the digital camera does not carry out any processing of image data, that is, CCD and other photographic components directly obtained from the digital signal processing and obtained. For example, for a 3 million-megapixel digital camera, a raw file holds 3 million-point photosensitive data. And we usually use JPEG format shooting, is a digital camera on the raw format, in the digital camera to add white balance and saturation parameters, and then generate image data, compression processing.

Digital camera with raw data processing software can be converted into TIFF and other ordinary image data, the user can set any white balance, sharpness, contrast and other parameters, so that users can create their favorite images. Processing RAW format image data differs from processing JPEG images in that image data does not deteriorate.

How do I get the raw format file?

You must have a camera in raw format to create a raw format file, and you need to set the camera to be stored in raw format before shooting. In Adobe Bridge and Photoshop, you can only handle the digital cameras they support, where you can view a list of supported cameras.

How do I process raw format files using Photoshop or Bridge?

In Photoshop, you can open the raw file directly. In bridge, browse to the RAW format file you want to process, as shown in Figure 37, select one or more raw files, right-click on it, and choose "Open in Camera raw" (You can also use the menu "File" → "Open in Camera raw").

As shown in Figure 38, the RAW format file opens in the Camera raw window, where you can manually adjust each file, such as adjusting its exposure, contrast, hue, and so on.

You can also use the AutoFit feature, as shown in Figure 39, when you check auto on the right side of the "exposure" (exposure), the image is automatically adjusted for exposure.

The Shadows (shading), brightness (brightness), contrast (contrast) are also set to Automatic, and the resulting results are shown in Figure 40.


Third, lens correction filter

The new lens correction filter (Lens correction filter) corrects defects in the lens distortion of a common camera, such as barrel deformation, pillow distortion, halo shadow, and color aberration. The following example shows how to correct distortion of the lens distortion.

First step: Use Photoshop CS2 to open the photo you want to correct. You can save the following image to a location and then open it using Photoshop CS2.

Step Two: Select menu command "filter" → "distort" → "Lens correction" (filter → twist lens → correction), open the Lens Correction dialog box.

Step three: Make adjustments as needed. Here, set the Remove distortion value to 28 to see the preview changes, as shown in Figure 41. Grids can help us observe the effect of correcting distortion.

Step Fourth: At the bottom right of the "edge" Drop-down list in the right to select "Edge Extension" (Edge extension), and adjust the extended value below 118, as shown in Figure 42, so that the edge of the image to expand to the appropriate size.

With this operation, a distorted picture is basically corrected. There are a number of options in the dialog box above where readers can try their role again.
Four, image denoising filter

The image noise is represented by the randomly generated exotic pixels of the image itself, usually due to the high ISO value of the camera, insufficient exposure or shooting at a lower shutter speed in a darker place. Low-end consumer cameras tend to produce more noise than high-end cameras. In addition, the image scanned into the computer will also appear many similar to the film particles noise.

Noise usually occurs in two forms: luminance noise and color noise. The new noise reduction filter helps remove the noise generated by JPEG image compression.

Using Image Noise Reduction filters

The first step: Use Photoshop CS2 to open the picture you want to reduce noise.

Step Two: Select menu command "filter" → "Noise" → "Reduce Noise" (filter → miscellaneous point → remove noise) and open the dialog box shown in Figure 43.

Step three: Adjust the values of each item as needed in the dialog box, below is the role of each.

    • Strength: The intensity of noise reduction. Controls the brightness noise value applied to all channels of the image.
    • Preserve Details: protection detail. Protects edge and image details such as hair, textured objects, etc. When the value is 100, the details can be protected to the maximum extent, but this can only minimize the brightness noise reduction. Try to find a proper balance between the two.
    • Reduce color noise: reduces colour noise. Can remove the randomly generated color noise, the higher the number, the more noise reduction.
    • Sharpen details: sharpening detail. Reducing the noise can also reduce the sharpness of the image. This can be used to sharpen the details and, of course, to use specialized sharpening filters.
    • Remove JPEG Artifacts: Select this to remove artifacts and halos from low-quality JPEG images.

The above is in the basic mode of image denoising. If you check "adovanced" in the dialog box, you can also switch to advanced mode. In advanced mode, the image can be reduced to noise on each channel, as shown in Figure 44.
