There are many new features added to Windows Vista, and some older components are being strengthened, and the resource manager is one of them. To be honest, the old version of Windows comes with a resource manager that is not easy to display, find, or locate, so that there are a lot of enhanced file management software, such as Total Commander, but the resource manager in Vista has changed.

The main improvements to the resource manager in Vista are as follows:

The file icon can be larger and the icon size can be dynamically resized;

A file or folder icon is no longer static content, but can be dynamically changed according to the contents of the file;

The icon added a check box, with one hand to operate the mouse can be continuous selection or interval selection;

Added a reading panel to display the contents of the current file, you can know the contents of the file without opening the file;

Powerful file filters and filters.

Large Icons Smooth Scaling

In older versions of Windows, icons are up to 32x32 pixels, although the maximum 48x48 pixel icon is supported in Windows XP, and the number of icon colors reaches 32 bits (24-bit images plus 8-bit alpha channels), making Windows XP icons more Colorful , the edges are smoother and transparent, but in today's view such standards are still not high enough. Because large-screen high-resolution displays are becoming more popular, for example, some high-end laptops have 1600x1200 or even higher resolutions on 15-inch screens. In such a screen, the traditional size of the icon and text will be too small to be recognizable. To solve this problem, the icon size in Vista has been enhanced, and the maximum can reach 256x256 pixels.

In addition to being able to support larger icons, the size of the icons can also be scaled smoothly. For example, we can open Vista Explorer and click the Views button, and switch between Windows XP in tiles, icons, thumbnails, and so on, which can be switched smoothly between these different views in Vista. As long as you drag the view slider up and down, you can switch between the different views (of course, directly click the Views button can directly switch between the different views), and as the slider drags, the icon displayed in the window can also be smooth scaling. Figure 1 shows the View slider, and it is adjusted that the icons displayed in the window are already the largest 256x256 pixels, are these icons shocking?

In fact, this feature for most of the current CRT and LCD display is not very meaningful, after all, these monitors can only reach 96dpi (Dot per Inch, each inch points, a simple understanding is that the length of each inch can be displayed in the number of pixels, the higher the number of displayed content of the finer) specifications, So the 256x256 resolution icon looks a bit large, and two or three icons almost occupy most of the area on the screen. But the design will be useful when the display technology improves later, and the icons will look finer and prettier.

folder icon

Using icons to represent files (folders) under Windows is a great breakthrough compared to the DOS file names and extensions displayed in text form. However, the old version of Windows used under the icon is not enough, is not directly based on the file's icon to determine the contents of the file or folder. While this has improved in Windows XP, it still needs to be strengthened. In Vista, this feature is improved.

For some files, such as graphics or video files, the icon content of the file is the thumbnail of the file itself. This is also different from the thumbnail mode under Windows XP, in Windows XP, only when we switch the view to thumbnail mode, the file is displayed in the thumbnail, but in Vista, regardless of the view, the icon content of the graphics file is a thumbnail of the file. It's just that the size of the thumbnails differs in different view modes.

For folders, Vista displays the contents of certain files within that folder (graphics files, video files, doc documents, and so on), and they stretch at a certain angle as if they were in a real folder (Figure 2). This is somewhat similar to the development of a beta version of Microsoft's previously released album Tool, code-named Max.

File check box file check box

You may all have this experience: in older versions of Windows, if you want to bulk select a batch of files, and if the files are contiguous, you can drag a selection box with your mouse and include it all, or select the first and last of the batch of files while pressing the SHIFT key. , and if you want to select a batch file at intervals, you can click to select each file at the same time you press the CTRL key. This requires two hands to operate, very inefficient. And one of the improvements in Vista allows us to liberate one hand. All files in Vista can display a check box, just click the checkbox to select the appropriate file. However, this feature is not turned on by default and requires that we enable it under the View tab of the folder option.

When you enable this feature, not all files or folder icons immediately display a check box, which is too ugly. Check boxes are not displayed until we move the mouse pointer over an item (Figure 3).
