Cost Calculation of data center cabling infrastructure

Pure economic measurement

To compare the total cost of copper wires and Fiber Channel, use the following equation:

(Cost 1 + cost 2 + ......) /Service life = average annual cost

In the equation above, cost 1 includes equipment, instruments, channels, and installation costs. These costs should also be included if there are old devices and/or deprecated cabling to be cleared before installation. Additionally, there are no card cost and time cost pre-installed for the device (for example, adding a fiber card to the server ). Finally, the downtime caused by changes should be included in cost 1. The overall cost can be estimated based on the channel type and the electronic device type, making it easier to make decisions. For example:

Server ABC + Optical Fiber card + 4 channel + installation + device + 4 switch port = cost 1

The annual cost 2 includes additional maintenance costs, power loss, cooling, and upgrades. Planned downtime is also included in the upgrade cost. Upgrading costs are critical for systems that require updates and patches every quarter, every month, or even every two weeks.

Maintenance + power loss + cooling + (upgrade cost * Number of upgrades) + downtime cost = cost 2

In the new data center (created from scratch), the manufacturer will be the best source of information. It is a good practice to discuss with people with similar installation experience, preferably those installed in the last year, in order to understand the cost of similar devices 2. In integration, readdress, upgrade, or new environment, it is best to consider the Extended Space in the future when installing the channel. This is helpful for adding new devices and protecting existing channels (which may need to be moved, added, or changed. In addition, it is also good for underground or air environments that do not have any deprecated cabling. In the event of a fire, deprecated cabling will fuel the fire, and deprecated cabling will also affect the performance of the air handler (air processor.

During integration or migration, calculating the total number of ports and increasing factors is very simple. Based on past experience, many data centers usually provide 48-port copper wires and 12 multimode optical fiber cables for each cabinet at the beginning. However, more switches and server cabinets may be needed. Before installation, you can count the number of existing instances. If there are no ready-made devices or devices to be moved, a little foresight is required during installation. Consider the channels, switches, routers, servers, PBX or ip pbx systems, and any storage network or storage area network. KVM conversion and other monitoring also need to be connected. Both in-band and out-of-band management must be taken into account.

Data center cabling Cost Calculation

A comprehensive planning guide will be helpful for the renovation of new or old devices. The following worksheet can be considered for purely economic calculation. The cost of all components required to connect to the server is considered in each row. If four vswitch ports are required, the calculation is based on four channels. Using these computing methods, you can calculate any channel (copper wire and optical fiber) and devices that will use the channel, including the conversion of network-to-storage connections. Sometimes, if Optical Fiber storage is used, it may be a combination of copper wires and optical fiber cables.

You can compare various options based on the media type. Remember, cabling channels (whether copper or optical fiber) will work well within 10 to 15 years, supporting 3-4 generations of active electronic devices and 2-3 Application versions.

In the first column, list the installation costs of all cabling channels. If cable trays are used, the installation cost will be lower. If deprecated cabling needs to be cleared, the cost should be included. If you need to modify the route and space, you also need to include the cost of these jobs. All connections to the power grid are attached, because these power grids are required whether you install a shielding system or connect to electronic devices. If you add a connection to the shield system, you need to divide the connection cost by the number of ports that share the ground bar. Newly Added shielded connectors stop blocking and share one connection. Only one connection is required for each 24 ports, so the cost is negligible.

In the second column, measure the device port cost, including installation, configuration, and testing. If you plan to use a rack switch or blade server, divide the rack cost by the number of ports, and then add the average cost to the cost of each port. This has a great impact on the cost of each port. For example, the price for each 1 GB copper port is about $197.92 per manufacturer's average price for a 48-port switch. The average blade size for one rack is about $208.33/Gb.

Rack cost and all management modules, redundant power supply, and other shared parts should be divided by the number of ports involved, and then included in the port cost. The average cost of the blade with racks will be higher, but it will not increase the real estate cost and the average port connection cost, which is very attractive. You can determine the trade-off before making a decision.

The average price of fiber port is about 875 USD. However, the blade density must be considered. If the port density is insufficient, additional Rack Space is required to provide sufficient connections. This is also an important factor to weigh.

(Rack cost + Management Module + redundant power supply)/total number of ports) + blade cost per port = total cost of equipment ports

Maintenance costs include maintenance and power loss costs. Remember, maintenance costs may be calculated based on the original purchase price, which is an important factor affecting decision-making. There are also cooling costs and expected software upgrade costs. For upgrades and patches, if 24 rack units and 4 unit-based racks are compared, the latter costs less. In addition, we need to consider the time required to change the machine, and so on. This number is a predicted estimate, so it is best to consult the managers and reference reports of other data centers, which will provide enough information for your estimated cost.

Add these three columns.

Channel cost + cost 1 + (Maintenance Cost * service life) = total cost of servers per port

This will be the total cost of devices and channels in column 4

Assuming that the life cycle is 10 to 20 years, the measurement supports the changes required for the current hardware during that time and the next generation or two generations of installation. For example, if you are using a category-5 cable, you must replace it. If you have installed an ancient 62.5 Micron Optical fiber, it may have to be replaced. Not electronic devices that do not support these old systems on the market, but their initial and maintenance costs are expensive.

The estimated downtime in column 8 is the most difficult to estimate. The cost of downtime may be like a guess. Here is a method for calculating the downtime. Multiply the number of users by the working hours of the year (the working hours are in the unit of hours), and then multiply the results with the income in addition to the previous ones. This can calculate the possible impact on earnings. Then, the average salary (including taxes and daily expenses) is divided by the annual working hours. This is the cost of losing everyone at the time of downtime, because they receive wages but cannot produce. By adding these two results, the downtime loss/person * hour is returned. Multiply this result by the number of users using the server, and the hourly downtime loss is achieved. Multiplied by any downtime required by application patches, firewall upgrades, and so on (in the unit of hours), this is the total cost of downtime loss. If there is downtime for cabling and electronic equipment, or additional personnel fees are incurred by sharing space with others, or supervising employees, these fees should be included in the downtime cost.

As shown in the following example, channel replacement is a more important factor in the case of device replacement. The added maintenance costs have an important impact on the data center. Enhanced cat6 and category 7/class F channels are the most cost-effective.

You can also add a trade-off factor in the last column: a specific standard, such as the required space, additional Rack Space, or importance sorting. If the annual cost and annual downtime cost are added, multiplied by the risk factor and the trade-off factor, you can determine which one has the greatest impact on the data center. This small plan can help you make the right decisions.

Because of the Trunking cables structure, multiple channels can be pulled into a group at the same time, which brings some benefits. Trunking cables are generally used in factories to connect to the Cabinet wiring board or to an out-of-the-box Optical Fiber Module. This reduces installation costs and ensures the quality of all terminals. Its structure makes channel management easier. The upgraded and deprecated cabling can also be easily identified.

Adding additional channels or changing channels is much more expensive than installing them at the beginning of the project. In addition, it may increase the risk of downtime and damage the installed device. After completing this wiring job, you will find that, in many cases, it may be because you have picked up sesame seeds and lost watermelon.
