To create a Word master document in Word2003, first switch the Word document view to outline view. Then click the view → outline menu command in the Word2003 menu bar to toggle the view. You can use the Outlining toolbar to perform all of the functions related to a master document, as shown in Figure 2008070921.

In the Word document, move the cursor to an empty paragraph, and in the Styles list, select the appropriate style to apply to the blank paragraph (for example, select Heading 4). Then click the Create Subdocument button on the Outlining toolbar to create a word subdocument and enter the word subdocument name in the Word subdocument edit box. After you have successfully created a word subdocument, the word subdocument automatically saves the word child document as a separate file with the name you just entered. Repeat this step to create multiple word subdocuments, as shown in Figure 2008070922.

Click the collapse/Expand subdocuments button on the Outlining toolbar to make the word subdocument a hyperlink, and then click the appropriate hyperlink while holding down the CTRL key to insert the corresponding word subdocument into the current Word document, as shown in Figure 2008070923.
