1 Getting Started case studies
In the first chapter, we have a comprehensive understanding of the architecture of the ArcGIS series software, and in this chapter we will familiarize ourselves with the use of ArcGIS for desktop in a single case, and gradually adapt to the interface and operation of the ArcGIS desktop from the problem solving process.

The practice data in this chapter is a simple plane of a residential district, which needs to be supplemented and completed by the existing base, and finished with a map.

1.1 Open the map document and browse
1. Click "Start" > "All Programs" > ArcGIS > ArcMap 10.4 to open ArcMap;

2. When ArcMap is opened, a dialog box pops up. If it is opened for the first time, then the recent inside is blank; if it is not the first time, then the recent will list the most recently opened map document;

3. Click Browse for more to open the dialog box for navigating the map document;



4. Select Community.mxd This map document from the practice data and click on the "Open" button.



When the map document opens, the left side is called the table of Contents to manage the data layer, the right area is the map display area, and the display, editing, selection, and analysis of the data are performed in this area.



5. Browse the map using the tools on the Tools toolbar. For the full-scale tool, you can click this button when you want to roll back to full view when you zoom in or out to see the data.



1.2 Editing Data
6. Click the Editor button on the toolbar to activate the Edit toolbar.



7. Click "Start Editing" on the Editor toolbar to open the Edit status.



8. Click the Create Feature window on the Editor toolbar, select the Building feature class, and select the appropriate construction tool. Referring to the styles of other buildings in the drawing, the construction tools are depicted along the outer contours of the 3 buildings shown in the figure. When drawing, click the left mouse button to add a node, double-click to finish the polygon drawing. After drawing these 3 polygons, the shape of the data part of the plot of the whole residential area is basically completed.





9. After the completion of the building outline of the drawing, but also to the building of some information (such as the number of buildings) into the system to display in the diagram, this is the attribute data editing. Click the Edit tool on the Editor toolbar, and then click the first polygon (building outline) drawn in the previous step, and the polygon is selected. With the polygon selected, click the Properties dialog box button on the Editor toolbar to open the Properties dialog box.



10. In the pop-up Properties dialog box, fill in "Building 4th" in the value of Bld_name, enter confirm.



11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 to complete the name editing of building--5 and building 2 of the other 6th buildings plotted in 8.

12. Click Stop Editing in the Editor drop-down menu on the Editor toolbar to end the edit and select Save edits.



By this step, the data editing input of the plot map is completed. Then the data display settings, mainly on the map to show the name of each building and other facilities in the community.

1.3 Setting the data display
13. In the table of contents, right-click on the building layer and select properties from the popup context menu.



14. In the Layer Properties dialog box that pops up, select the Label tab, under this tab, select Label features in this layer to display the labels for the layers.



15. Select Bld_name in the label Field to mark the building name.

16. Set the font for the callout text, including color, size, and so on. and click OK.

As of this step, the drawing and display settings for the floor plan have been completed. The following begins the layout of the map by adding the appropriate map elements (such as scale bars, etc.).

1.4 map decoration and output
17. Click the Layout View button in the lower left corner of the display area to switch to Layout view for the map layout decoration.



18. Click Insert on the menu to select Title. The title is inserted on the map. Enter the title content and then enter OK. Double-click the caption to open the caption's Property Settings dialog box to set the title, size, color, and so on.



19. Click Insert on the menu, select North Arrow, insert the compass, select a suitable north pin style, and place it where appropriate.



20. Click Insert on the menu, select Scale Bar, insert the bar, select an appropriate scale bar style, and place it in the He Dang.



After adding the necessary map elements, the plot of the cell has been made and can be saved as an MXD document by clicking Save under the File menu. But most of the time we need to use ArcGIS-made maps in Word documents or slides, so you can export your prepared map to a normal image format.

21. Open the Export Map dialog box by clicking Export Map under the File menu. Set the format, path and resolution of the picture and save it.



The above practice includes data browsing, editing, display, map layout of the entire process, completed a residential area of the plane.
