Hyper-V Server shared VHDX

In Windows Server R2, you can share virtual disk files (only. VHDX-formatted disk files) between multiple virtual machines. Administrators can use these. vhdx files as shared storage for a virtual machine failover cluster or guest cluster. For example, create a shared. vhdx file for the data disk and the witness disk (but you should not use the shared. vhdx file as the operating system virtual disk file).

This change simplifies the deployment of guest cluster configurations. Shared. vhdx file configurations are easier to deploy than virtual Fibre Channel or ISCSI. When you configure a virtual machine to use a shared. vhdx file, you do not need to change the storage configuration, such as zone and LUN masking, and the underlying storage infrastructure is not exposed to virtual machine users.

Shared virtual disks are ideal for SQL server database files, file server services running inside virtual machines, and database files located on shared disks.

The guest failover cluster must use a shared virtual disk in the. vhdx format. Although the shared virtual disk must use the. vhdx file format for the data drive, the virtual machine's operating system disk can use the. vhd or. vhdx file format.

There are two main ways to deploy a Hyper-V guest failover cluster that uses shared virtual disks. Shared virtual disks for guest failover clusters can be deployed to:

1) block storage of cluster shared volumes (CSV) (including storage space for the cluster).

2) SMB 3.0 file-based storage in scale-out file servers.

650) this.width=650; "height=" 577 "title=" clip_image006 "style=" margin:0px;border:0px;padding-top:0px; Padding-right:0px;padding-left:0px;background-image:none, "alt=" clip_image006 "src=" http://s3.51cto.com/wyfs02/ M01/58/8c/wkiol1sz3d2s4griaammirotvdk038.jpg "border=" 0 "/>

Hyper-V guest failover clustering can be configured and deployed using Hyper-V Manager, failover Cluster Manager, and Windows PowerShell.

To deploy a guest cluster using a shared VHDX, the following conditions are true:

1) Two Windows server R2 or Hyper-V Server R2 cluster nodes with Hyper-V.

2) The server must be part of the same Active Directory domain.

3) configured shared storage resources with availability-for example, block storage of CSV (for example, cluster storage space) or SMB 3.0 scale-out File server cluster (running Windows Server R2) file-based storage.

4) The failover cluster has sufficient memory, disk, and processor capacity to support multiple virtual machines required by the guest failover cluster.

This experiment demonstrates how to designate a virtual hard disk (. vhdx file) as shared storage for multiple virtual machines that have been configured as guest failover clusters.

1. First, refer to the preceding configuration for Hyper-V failover clustering, and use cluster Shared volumes (CSV) on block-level storage, if the administrator wants to store all virtual machine files on a scale-out file server, you do not need shared block-level storage on the Hyper-V cluster.

2. Open failover Cluster Manager, right-click Role, select New virtual machine

8. On the Connect virtual hard disk page, create a virtual hard disk or use an existing virtual hard disk that resides on the shared storage. (If you are using an existing virtual hard disk, the guest operating system must be Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server R2.) In the Location box, specify the CSV path or SMB file share path.
