Blue giant IBM is currently working on a project called blue spruce, a browser-based application development platform. Readwriteweb is exclusively authorized to see the original appearance of blue spruce. Blue Spruce is based on open standards and will challenge two Existing RIA platforms, Microsoft's Silverlight and Adobe Flash.

Blue Spruce has just started for five months and has not been made public yet. It includes two parts:

    • Blue Spruce client Tool
    • Blue Spruce auxiliary Web Server

The following is what we know about the blue spruce platform:

    • Use WebKit Engine
    • Use the following open standards: HTML, JavaScript, CSS, (all Ajax), XMPP, H.264
    • The server runs on Linux and MacOS X.
    • With openajax, it will support any widgets
    • Migrating to IE6 + and Firefox
Not a browser, but a platform

It should be clarified that IBM is not developing a browser. The client of this project is based on a variety of browser-based open standard technologies. Eventually, they will be integrated into existing browsers, such as safari, in Firefox and IE.

The original intention of IBM's plan is to turn browsers into application platforms and put pressure on developers who are unwilling to leave their desktops, such as Microsoft and Adobe. It is also worth mentioning that this project is not an open-source project. It is built on open standards and may be open-source in the future, but it is too early.

Why does ibm focus on browsers?

When asked why IBM is focusing on browsers, IBM Internet technology CTO David boloker
Users keep telling them they are unwilling to installProgramThe customer needs rich experience on the desktop, but wants to implement it in the browser, collaboration and data sharing are also a trend, so IBM
Combine these things into blue spruce.

Concept application demonstration

Currently, blue spruce is in closed beta testing and IBM is creating applications for a range of users, including Reuters and hospitals in Boston and New Zealand. They are currently concentrated in three areas: finance, healthcare and heavy industry.

IBM demonstrated some conceptual applications to readwriteweb. This includes an Ajax-based hybrid application, which is used by users in different locations (San Francisco and Boston). audio, video, instant message, and feeds are integrated on a browser page, and more rich features.

In other words, many different components (MashUps, video, audio, etc)
Run on the same browser page at the same time. Different users can interact with these components in real time.
All these components are active in real time. Users can change their statuses and all other users can see this change in real time. This allows users to hold on-site meetings in a browser.
