Learn the basics of hard disk partitioning

The newly bought hard disk is equivalent to a "white paper", and in order to be able to use it better, we have to divide a few small pieces on the "white paper" and then hit the grid. In this way, when users write or paint on "white paper", they are not only orderly, but can make full use of resources. First, the basic knowledge of the Division

Primary partitions, extended partitions, logical partitions

The primary partition of a hard disk is the hard disk partition that contains the files and data necessary to boot the operating system, and the hard disk must have a primary partition to install the operating system on the hard disk.

An extended partition is a partition other than the primary partition, but it cannot be used directly, and it must be divided into several logical partitions. Logical partitions are the D, E, F, and other disks we normally see in the operating system.

Partition format

"Format is equivalent to playing on the white Paper grid," and this partition format is like this "lattice" style, different operating systems play "lattice" way is not the same, the current Windows used in the partition format mainly FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, Almost all of these operating systems support FAT16. However, the FAT16 partition format of the hard disk is actually inefficient, so today the partition format is less used.

FAT32 uses a 32-bit file allocation table to greatly enhance its ability to manage disk, which is currently the most used partition format, and WIN98/ME/2000/XP supports it. In general, when partitioning, King suggested that it is best to set the partition to FAT32 format, so that you can achieve maximum compatibility.

The advantage of NTFS is that security and stability are extremely good. However, other than WINNT/2000/XP, the partition format is not recognized by other operating systems, so partitions in this format are not visible in DOS and Win9x.

Zoning Principles

Regardless of which partitioning software is used, we should follow the following sequence in setting up partitions on the new hard disk: establishing the primary partition → establishing the extended partition → establishing the logical partition → activating the primary partition → formatting all the partitions (Figure 1).
