Microsoft Sync Framework announced the latest development progress of the "Huron" project. Huron is a project currently in the initial stage of development planning, and the development time is not too long.
What is Huron?
- One sentence: Huron enables data synchronization between your local data (database) and the Cloud data center.
- To put it simply, Huron provides the Database Synchronization capability through a Sync Service sitting located in the Azure Data Center (Azure Data Centers, from your local database to Cloud DB (SQL DATA SERVICE), it achieves a "seamless connection" between your local database and Cloud DB ".
The goal of the Huron project is to remove all the tedious steps that can be removed (including configuration, expansion, and security-related complex procedures), so that it can be implemented simply from the local database (for example: SQL Server and SQL Compact) share information to Cloud DB. At the same time, Huron provides an easy-to-use interface configuration tool and synchronization components for developers to use.
So far, the development has had a bad news: the MSF team decided not to support synchronization of Microsoft Access databases for the time being. Although many customers currently need this function, they can only give up temporarily based on budget and resource considerations. The root cause is that Microsoft already has a mature synchronization Framework (Microsoft Sync Framework) to synchronize SQL Server and SQL Compact. Because the development of Huron on the Inheritance of this framework gets twice the result with half the effort, we temporarily gave up support for Microsoft Access databases.
For Access users, Microsoft recommends that you migrate the data in Access to SQL Server so that it can synchronize with Cloud DB until Huron supports Access.
Some of the following are from the Huron Management Studio Dev UI. We can see that the database types support SQL server and SQL COMPACT Edition.
