Photoshop Custom Rust Brush

Rust is a disaster for metal products and precision machinery. Under the action of time and water, metal elements and oxygen produce chemical action to produce ferric oxide compounds, which is what we call rust. The emergence of rust not only affects the appearance but also affects the use of the product itself. But for designers who are focused on image processing, rust can really reflect sloppy, texture and reality, which is a rare way to behave.

In this issue, we do not need to wait for the creation of nature, directly using Photoshop to make realistic rust effect.

1. Material materials

There are many ways to make rust, but the use of chemical methods is a quick, easy and safe method, but must do a good job of safety measures oh.

Step 1

Several things need to be prepared before the rust is started: metal, wire brush, brush, hydrogen peroxide, salt. Here the metal can choose iron plate and so on, casually in the hardware store can find, and then use a magnet to try is not iron material.

Usually metal pieces will have a layer of rust, need to remove, although you can choose to buy detergent, but you can use a cheap and strong steel wire brushes, not only can increase the texture of the material, but also to make the metal plate rust open up more real.

Pour the prepared hydrogen peroxide into the small cup and brush the scratches on the metal plate with a brush brush.

Sprinkle the salt where the hydrogen peroxide is brushing, and then continue with the brush.

The next step is to quietly wait for the chemical reaction to occur, see the foam, oxygen in the hydrogen peroxide in the rapid iron oxide, and as the reaction progresses, the foam more and more. The longer the waiting time, the more rust is produced.

2. Create brushes

But when you need to clean up residues such as hydrogen peroxide, you should be as careful as possible. Because this is where most of the oxides are dissolved in liquids and are easily stained. When the rust settles down for 10-15 minutes, it takes a long time to choose to dry completely, but more rust will be obtained.

The following is the digital processing of the rust track texture. According to the drying method and the state of the texture, you can choose to scan or take pictures of the way to get the rust trace texture. And the difficulty of taking pictures is to treat the reflected light on the metal plate evenly.

Open Photoshop, select Image > Adjust > Levels, and as shown in the following illustration, pull the ends of the color swatch to the edge to ensure that the bright pixel is all white and the dark pixel is all black.

After adjusting the color level, switch to the channel panel, by clicking on each color channel, to find out the rust and background color contrast effect most obvious. For the material, The blue channel is the most intense color contrast. Select Select > Select all, and then edit > copy.

Click Back to the RGB color channel and back to the Layers panel, select Edit > Paste to paste the blue channel as a new layer.

Select Dodge, set brush for large soft circle. The setting range is high light and exposure is 10%. Use the Dodge tool to remove the background color from the uneven edges of the rust track.

Switch to the Brush tool, select the soft round white, paint the edges of the image white, and other useless pixels in the rust, as shown in the following figure.

The following image changes the brush. Select Edit > Define brush preset, fill in the name of the brush, and click OK to add the brush to the brush library!

3. Use brushes

is not very simple, the actual physical transformation of the image, and then installed into the brush, which will let us see countless possibilities. Because you can choose physical digitization according to your preferences. If you don't have time to make or create your own brushes, you can continue to look down.

Download the brush Rust.abr in the attachment of the original tutorial, then select "Edit > Preset > Preset manager" in PS and select load Rust.abr in the brush option.
