Use Reporting Services Configuration Manager to configure the Reporting services installation. If you use the file only option to install a report server, you must use this tool to configure the server to use the server. If you installed the report server by using the default configuration installation option, you can use this tool to verify or modify the settings that you specified during Setup. Reporting Services Configuration Manager can be used to configure a local or remote report server instance. You can use Reporting Services Configuration Manager to perform the following tasks:

    • Configure the Report Server service account. This account was originally configured during the installation process, but if you need to update your password or use a different account, you can use Reporting Services Configuration Manager to make modifications.

    • The URL that is created and configured. Both the report server and Report Manager are ASP. NET applications that can be accessed through a URL. The report server URL provides access to the report server SOAP endpoint. The Report Manager URL is used to open Report Manager. You can configure one or more URLs for each application.

    • To create and configure a report server database. The report server is a stateless server that needs to use the SQL Server database for internal storage. You can use Reporting Services Configuration Manager to create a report server database and configure connections to that database. You can also select an existing report server database that already contains the content you want to use.

    • To configure the scale-out deployment. Reporting Services support allows multiple report server instances to use a deployment topology that shares a report server database. To deploy a report server scale-out deployment, use Reporting Services Configuration Manager to connect each report server to the shared Report server database. For more information, see Planning for scale-out deployment.

    • Backs up, restores, or replaces the connection string used to encrypt the store and the symmetric key for the credential. If you change the service account or move the report server database to another computer, you must back up the symmetric key.

    • To configure the unattended execution account. You can use this account for remote connections during scheduled operations or when user credentials are not available.

    • To configure Report Server e-mail. Reporting Services provides a report server e-mail delivery extension that uses the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) to deliver report or report processing notifications to an e-mail address. You can use the Reporting Services Configuration tool to specify an SMTP server or gateway for e-mail delivery on your network.

Reporting Services Configuration Manager does not help you manage Report server content, enable additional features, or grant access to the server. Full deployment also requires that you use SQL server Management Studio to enable additional features or modify the default values, and use Report Manager to grant users access to the server. For an overview of deployment tasks, see Server Deployment Checklist.

using Reporting Services Configuration Manager

You can open this tool from the SQL Server program group on the report server computer.

Reporting Services Configuration Manager is version-specific. The Reporting Services Configuration tool, which is installed with this version of SQL Server, cannot be used to configure earlier versions of Reporting services. If you are running a new version and an older version of Reporting Services in parallel on the same computer, you must configure each instance with the Reporting Service Configuration tool installed with each version.

To use the Reporting Services Configuration tool, you must have the following permissions:

    • You have local system administrator rights on the computer that hosts the report server that you want to configure. If you are configuring a remote computer, you must also have Local system administrator permissions on the computer.

    • You must have permission to create a database for the SQL Server database engine that is used to host the report server database.

    • The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service must be enabled and run on any report server that is being configured. The Reporting Services Configuration tool uses a report server WMI provider to connect to both local and remote report servers. If you are configuring a remote report server, the computer must allow remote WMI access. For more information, see How to configure a report server for remote administration.

    • Before you can connect to a remote report server instance and configure it, you must make the remote Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) call available through Windows Firewall. For more information, see How to configure a report server for remote administration in SQL server Books Online.

When you install Reporting services, the Reporting Services Configuration tool is installed automatically.

Only one report server can be connected and configured at a time. Displays the Reporting Services Configuration tool after connecting to a SQL Server 2008 reporting Server.

start Reporting Services Configuration Manager Start Reporting Services Configuration
    1. Click Start, point to All programs, click Microsoft SQL Server R2 and then click Configure Tools.

If you want to configure a report server instance from a previous version of SQL Server, open the program folder for this version. For example, when you open the Configuration tool for a SQL Server 2005 server component, you should point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and not Microsoft SQL Server R2.

    2. Click Reporting Services Configuration Manager. The Connect to Report Server Instance dialog box appears, from which you can select the report server instance that you want to configure.

    3. In server name, specify the name of the computer on which the report server instance is installed. By default, the name of the local computer is displayed, but if you want to connect to a report server that is installed on a remote computer, you can type the name of the remote SQL server instance.

    4. If you specify a remote computer, click Find to establish a connection.

    5. In Report Server instance, select the SQL Server Reporting Services instance that you want to configure. Only the report server instance of this version of SQL Server is displayed in the list. You cannot configure an earlier version of Reporting Services.

    6. Click Connect.
