Router WAN and LAN interface types

There are different interfaces on the vro. For general users, we only need to use the WAN port and LAN port. These two interfaces look the same, but they are used differently, this article introduces the differences between the WAN port and the LAN port.

1. WAN is written in the first letter of the English Wide Area Network, that is, WAN, while LAN is written in the Local Area Network, that is, LAN. From their names, we can easily see that, the WAN port is mainly used to connect external networks, such as ADSL, DDN, and Ethernet access lines, while the LAN port is used to connect the internal network of the home. It is mainly used to connect to switches, hubs, or computers in the network, it can be said that these two types of network ports are external and internal.

2. The WAN port and LAN port on the Broadband Router have different network cable connection methods. The network cable provided by the network operator is inserted on the WAN port, then, connect several computers with Internet shared access to the LAN port, and then use a computer to log on to the management interface of the router and perform corresponding configuration to complete Internet shared access.

3. network data transmission at the WAN port and LAN port. When a machine in the home network sends a data packet to the external network, it first sends a request to the default gateway, that is, it is sent to the Broadband Router. When the router analyzes the Intranet IP address in the packet, it checks the NAT address translation table of the device. After the corresponding entries are found, the WAN port IP address is used to communicate with the external network.

4. After the external network receives the packet, it will parse the WAN port IP address of the router in the packet, respond to the IP address, and send the response packet to the router. Then, the vro performs NAT address translation again to convert the WAN port IP address to the Intranet IP address that sends the request, and finally completes the entire packet sending and receiving process.

5. In addition to increasing bandwidth, most vrouters with multiple WAN ports also support Automatic Load Balancing and real-time backup, and can specify a priority channel based on the source or destination address, when the fault occurs, the traffic is automatically re-allocated. Using a multi-Wan port Broadband Router can basically avoid network interruptions caused by network operators, although the purchase of Multi-Wan Port Routers and the increase of network access lines will increase the investment, for enterprise users, the guarantee is far greater than paid.

6. Apart from the conventional usage of connecting the WAN port to the Internet access line and connecting the LAN port to the Intranet computer, we can also connect the access line and the network cable connected to the computer to the LAN port, when using a Broadband Router as a switch, there are several important points to note about this connection method. First, you need the LAN port of your Broadband Router or the network port of the uplink equipment to support port switching (Auto MDI/MDIX) function. Otherwise, you may need to change your direct connection to a cross line so that your Broadband Router can connect to the external network through the LAN port.

7. If you use this method, the routing function of the Broadband Router is lost. To achieve Internet sharing, you need your computer in the home network to use the valid IP address in your carrier network. At the same time, in order to keep the vro accessible, you must set the IP address of the LAN port of the vro。 as the valid carrier address.
