Tutorial: how to set the number of AP users and Server Load balancer

Source: Internet
Author: User

Due to restrictions on the working principle of WLAN, each wireless client is connected to the AP with the shared bandwidth. Therefore, if the number of users on an AP is too large or the traffic is too large, it will inevitably affect the normal use of all users, and even cause the AP to experience heavy load and crash. To avoid this problem, we will take the NETGEAR smart wireless controller as an example to explain how to set the limit on the number of AP users and SLB for users in IT168.

I. Maximum number of users

NETGEAR ProSafe WFS709TP can limit the maximum number of users globally or individually. When the number of wireless clients on the AP reaches the set value, the AP will no longer allow access from other clients until clients are disconnected.

1. Set the global maximum number of users

To limit the number of users for all APs in WFS709TP, go to Configuration> Advanced> WLAN> Radio. On the 802.11b/g page, set Max Clients to the desired value (64 by default, 0 to 255 users can be set ). Click Apply.

2. Set the maximum number of users for a single AP

If you only need to set the maximum number of users for an AP, go to Configuration> Advanced> WLAN> Advanced and click Add to Add the Location ID of the AP to be set.

Then select the 802.11b/g page, which also modifies Max Clients. Click Apply after setting.

Ii. Server Load balancer settings

WFS709TP supports adjusting Server Load balancer based on the number of users and AP load bandwidth. When an AP reaches the threshold value enabled by Server Load balancer, the AP will try to prevent the client from connecting to the AP, so that the client needs to find other APs to connect.

Choose Configuration> Advanced> RF Management> Optimization> Load Balancing.

Enable Load Balancing: enables the Load Balancing function.

Wait Time before applying Load Balancing (secs): the waiting Time (in seconds) When Server Load balancer starts ). This function prevents Server Load balancer from being started repeatedly when clients are disconnected on an AP repeatedly. The default value is 30 seconds.

Max Association Retries: the number of times the AP rejects an AP when the load of an AP is full and a client tries to connect to the AP. The default value is 8.

Maximum User Count-High Watermark: when the number of clients on the AP increases to this value, Server Load balancer starts.

Maximum User Count-Low Watermark: when the number of clients on the AP drops to this value, the Server Load balancer function is disabled.

(The above two items are Server Load balancer for the number of users. For example, when High Watermark is set to 25 and Low is set to 20, if the number of users of one AP reaches 25, it will begin to reject access from other clients, so that the client has to find other APs for access. It is not allowed to access other clients until the number of clients on the client drops to 20 .)

Bandwidth Utilization Threshold-High Watermark (%): When the load Bandwidth on the AP increases to this value, start load balancing.

Bandwidth Utilization Threshold-Low Watermark (%): When the load Bandwidth on the AP is reduced to this value, disable the load balancing function.

(The above two items are load balancing for AP bandwidth. For example, when High Watermark is set to 70 and Low is set to 50, if the load bandwidth of an AP reaches 70%, it will begin to reject access from other clients, so that the client has to find other APs for access. It is not allowed to access other clients until the bandwidth is reduced to 50% .)
