When you log on to the Ubuntu 11.10 on the VMware Workstation, the user password is forgotten, and here's how I resolved this issue:
1) Restart the Ubtuntu 11.10 system while holding down the SHIFT key for a long time to enter the Grub menu: GNU grub version 1.99-12ubuntu5;
2) Select the second item: Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-12-generic (recovery mode), press ENTER to enter recovery Menu;
3) Select Fourth: root Drop to root shell prompt, press ENTER, the command line input appears below: Root[ubtuntu]/root #
4) Enter the command after "#": passwd uername Enter
will appear asking you to enter a new password: new password Enter
will appear asking you to enter the new password again: new password Enter
The password settings will appear successfully: Passwd:password updated successfully; (*)
5) Password reset complete, back to login interface login
In some cases, however, it may appear that the step returned in the (*) is not a successful message, but instead: Authentication token manipulation Error
Then enter in Root[ubtuntu]/root # After: Mount-o Rw,remount/
Then follow step 4) and it's OK!
View All Users
cat/etc/passwd
OR you can view per page, use following commands
less/etc/passwdmore/etc/passwd
To avoid the hassle, I changed the root and the target account I found in the change.
