VoIP and instant messaging problems: Skype does not support IPv6

Currently, Skype can be bundled in Windows 8, but the problem is that it is not applicable to IPv6. Although there is no built-in advertisement or private space guarantee, Skype is still a speech software that is applied through Internet Protocol (VoIP) and instant messaging (IM) clients. Indeed, Microsoft is using Skype to replace other instant messaging software. However, another problem with Skype is increasingly confusing: it does not support Internet Protocol 6th (IPv6 ).

This is quite strange. Because both Windows 8 and Microsoft earlier OS versions support IPv6. As the last IPv4 address gradually disappears, more and more commercial and enterprise groups are switching to IPv6 protocol standards. At the same time, most Microsoft applications have long supported the next generation of Internet protocols. Because Skype is still based on the IPv4 protocol, it not only becomes unavailable to some users, but also becomes an obstacle for IPv6 adoption.

Cameron Byrne, a technical architect at T-Mobile, observed a message on the IPv6 internet operator list, "even though another year has passed, skype is still one of the most popular applications, so its dependence on IPv4 indeed hinders IPv6 adoption. Skype is a typical example of IPv4 dependency ."

In fact, despite the above problems, Skype is still very popular. Skype may occupy 1/3 of the long-distance telephone business, and it is a good lovedr on Android as a way to avoid the carrier voice minute limit.

This is of course good, but with Dan York, Senior content strategy experts from the Internet Association pointed out that Skype's IPv4 requirement is a very real problem of moving the Internet to the next-generation protocol. "Skype does not support IPv6, which is a major obstacle for many organizations, and many people tell me that they cannot move to IPv6 networks only (or for them to even consider the obstacles of IPv6, that is, 'skype is not compatible with IPv6, so why do we have to worry about it '.) . In fact, this is the main reason why we cannot migrate to IPv6 in the home network ."

Because the IPv4 address will soon be exhausted, the last IPv4 address in North America's North America is expected to be allocated in half a year. Microsoft needs to solve this problem as soon as possible. When a reporter asked Microsoft about its countermeasures, Microsoft only replied that "Skype does not support IPv6 at this time. What Microsoft has to do now is to select a time to solve this problem ".

We believe Microsoft can do this. We can see that Lync 2013 is an Enterprise Collaboration Server of Microsoft. It supports both VoIP and IM, and is compatible with Skype's interconnectivity. It also supports IPv6.
