Differences between Fermi, gf100, and gtx400

There are rumors about NVIDIA's first dx11 product as early as half a year ago or even earlier. The chip with 3 billion transistors, from the earliest Fermi to the later gf100, to the geforce GTX 480/470 released today, is rumored to have changed its name. So what are the differences between these names?

Fermi core perspective

Fermi

The name of NVIDIA's first dx11 product was "Fermi", which was first heard by people. In fact, NVIDIA used the names of scientists to name the product architecture as early as the previous generation, such as the g80 era, NVIDIA used the famous physicist Tesla to name it.

NVIDIA's first dx11 product architecture was named by another physicist, Enrico Fermi (nscience-Fermi. That is to say, we usually call Fermi the name of NVIDIA for the core architecture of this generation of graphics cards (including all products in the home and professional fields), rather than a specific product (for example, fermi does not represent gtx480 ).

It is hard to understand why NVIDIA calls the architecture of the previous gtx280 series products gt200 (Geforce of Tesla, Using Tesla's second-generation high-end products.

Gf100

The next gf100 may be more confusing to you. I believe many of my friends have seen the first impression of gf100 = geforce 100. If you really want to do this, you are very wrong. In gf100, "gf" is the abbreviation of three words. The original text isGeforce of Fermi. That is to say, what "gf" actually wants to express is-a geforce product using the Fermi architecture. The subsequent "100" indicates the first generation of high-end geforce products using the Fermi architecture.

That is to say, we may also see gf120, gf150, gf200, gf300 and other products in the market. Of course, whether multi-generation products can be continued depends on whether the Fermi product architecture can adapt to the future development direction of the game.

In addition, the "gf100" that will be used multiple times in the product architecture later in this article will represent the gf100 product using the Fermi architecture, rather than directly equivalent to gtx133 (both in terms of concept

).

Gtx400

After clarifying the meaning of Fermi and gf100, gtx400 is easy to understand.
Gtx400 is still NVIDIA's geforce product naming scheme, which was first introduced from geforce GTX 280. Among them, "GTX" indicates the high-end products, while "4" in "400" indicates the first generation of NVIDIA products. The first release will include geforce GTX 480 and GTX 470.

In the future, we may also see gtx460, gts450, gt440, and gt420.

In short, NVIDIA products for the home field are still named in the traditional way, that is, geforce GTX 480 and GTX 470, while Fermi and gf100 are actually NVIDIA's internal product code, it does not make much sense for consumers.
