WICD is an open-source wired and wireless network Connection Manager under Linux. You can set various parameters for network connections in a simple interface.
Wicd's function:
No need to rely on the GNOME runtime environment (although it does require GTK), which means it can be used under Xfce, Fluxbox, Openbox, enlightenment, etc. x
Can manage wired and wireless network connections
Each wireless and wired network connection has a separate configuration file
Supports multiple encryption methods, including WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.
Maintain compatibility with Wireless-tools
Display network status and signal strength on the system tray
install Wicd in Ubuntu:
First edit the/etc/apt/sources.list file
sudo gedit/etc/apt/sources.list
7.10 (gutsy) adds the following line to the inside:
Deb Http://apt.wicd.net Gutsy Extras
8.04 (Hardy) users add this line inside:
Deb Http://apt.wicd.net Hardy Extras
Save exit
Now update the source list with the following command
sudo aptitude update
Install WICD with the following line command
sudo aptitude install WICD
Note that this action will remove GNOME's default network manager Network-manager and may cause temporary loss of network connectivity.
In GNOME, if you want it to start automatically and display the system tray icon. Then click Add in the system → preferences → session launcher tab. Set a name (such as "Wicd") and enter "/opt/wicd/tray.py" in the command column.

The way to start Wicd from the Application menu in GNOME is to click application → Internet →wicd.
In the Wicd window you will see a list of the wireless networks detected by the system. Sometimes WICD cannot search for wireless networks in all ranges when it is just started. Please click on the Refresh button on the sidebar to search again.
Click on the connection below the network name and wait a few seconds to connect to your chosen network.
If the network is encrypted, you need to do something more. WICD supported encryption methods include: WPA, WEP, LEAP, TTLS, EAP, and PEAP.
Click the arrow on the edge of the network name you want to connect to, and then click Advanced Settings . Select the Use encryption box here and select the corresponding encryption method in the Drop-down menu, and finally fill in your password in the key bar.
