1 city form lab

The city morphology laboratory is located in Singapore. It is jointly established by the University of Science and Technology and Design of Singapore and the Institute of Architecture and planning of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. It focuses on the empirical study of city morphology. We have developed new software tools to study city forms; using the most advanced spatial analysis and statistical methods to study how the physical model of urban infrastructure affects the social, environmental, and economic volume of the urban environment, at the same time, we develop innovative design and policy solutions to address the challenges of contemporary cities. By bringing together the expertise and design advantages of city research in multiple fields, we have developed software that is sensitive to context and promptly understands how urban forms affect the quality of urban life in the 21st century.

2 urban network analysis: atoolbox for ArcGIS 10/10 .1

The city form lab has released a very advanced urban network analysis toolbox. The ArcGIS toolbox can be used to calculate five types of spatial network diagram analysis measures: arrival, gravity, intermediary, closest, and flatness.

Arrival measurement can be used to estimate the number of destinations of a certain type (buildings, residents, jobs, transfer stations), on the condition that a walking radius is given along the road, starting from each building. In addition, the inter-building measurement can be used to quantify the number of pedestrians that each building may pass through.

These tools include three important functions that make them particularly suitable for spatial analysis of urban street networks. First, they can explain the geometric and topological structures in the input network and use the impedance factors of the metric distance (such as the table) or topological distance (such as the circle) in the analysis. Second, unlike the previous software tools, there are only two network elements (nodes and edges) in the operation. The una tool includes the third network element: Building, this is the unit of spatial analysis used as all measures. Therefore, two adjacent buildings on the same street fragment have different results. Third, una tools allow additional building weights based on certain characteristics; or specify a strong impact of important buildings on the analysis results; therefore, more accurate and reliable results can be obtained for any detailed measures.

The target group of this tool is city designers, architects, planners, geoologists, and space analysts who are interested in studying the city's spatial configuration, related social, economic, and environmental processes. This toolbox can be easily expanded. It is suitable for sparse large-scale regional networks and also suitable for small-scale and detailed Network Analysis in densely populated urban areas.

This toolkit requires ArcGIS network analysis extension ArcGIS 10 software.

3. Installation Requirements

The operating system language must be in English.
ArcGIS 10 or 10.1 is required, and the network analysis extension is enabled.
SP2 must be installed for ArcGIS 10 desktop.

4. Composition of downloaded files

Download urbannetworkanalysis.zip. After decompression, you will find the following:
Toolbox file: urban_network_analysis_tool.tbx
Help document: una_help.pdf
Script Folder: the scripts folder contains all the script files required to run the tool.
Test_files Folder: contains all test data

Symbology_layers Folder: a symbolic template that contains the image results automatically returned by ArcGIS

5 Installation

To install the toolkit, you must first open arcmap10 or 10.1, place the toolbox in the visible state, right-click the toolbox, select Add toolbox, select the downloaded urbannetworkanalysis. tbx file, and click open.

The una Toolbox should appear in the toolbox list as follows:

If you want ArcGIS to load the Toolkit by default at each startup, right-click the tool in the toolbox and select the default one.

Test File

The downloaded ZIP folder contains a street network file containing Cambridge and Somerville Ma (streets3.nd) data, and shapefile data of the corresponding building polygon and points. It also includes shapefile of Cambridge/Somerville road connection points, which can be used only to Test Nodes and edges. There are also building centers and network data in the Manhattan area.
