Back up, restore, or move a website

 

Your workgroup has just published their latest quarterly reports to multiple document libraries on the workgroup website, and you want to back up your website at this critical moment. If your workgroup has been moved to another group in your organization, you need to move the workgroup website to another server. You can use Microsoft Office Sharepoint designer 2007 to create a backup copy of a website or a sub-website, and then recreate the website on the same server or another server.

When backing up and restoring a website, you actually perform three separate operations: First, you back up the website to a single file. Then, you create a blank website as the target website. Finally, you can restore the backup website to the target website.

Should I use the backup and restore feature or another packaging feature?

 

There are three different functions for packaging websites: In Office Sharepoint designer 2007, you can back up a website or create a web package, and save the website as a website template in a browser. Which function you choose depends on what you want to achieve.

Web package (. fwp file)This feature can be used when you want to share or reuse a webpage, website, list, or library structure. With Web packages, You can package the entire website or select the desired page, list, or library. Web packages are an excellent way to copy website structures, but they do not include list data, subwebsites, or security and permission settings. The Web package can also contain custom links. Backup and restoration (. CMP file)This feature can be used when you want to back up the entire website or sub-website or move the entire website or sub-website to another server or location. Unlike web packages, content migration packages include list data, but you cannot select to include only specific website elements. Note that you may lose some customization or settings during this process. For example, backup files do not include workflows, notifications, and attributes stored at the website set level. The backup file does not include the "recycle bin" status or objects in it. To use "Backup and Restore", you must have administrator permissions for the website.

Website template (. STP file)You can use this function to create multiple websites based on the same basic content or website structure. For example, you may want all the subnets created on a website to have similar website structures, appearances, and even content. Therefore, you can save a website as a website template and add it to the "website template library" so that anyone can use the website as a template. Unlike web packages, website templates can include list data. You must have the Administrator permission for the website to create the website template and write access to the "website template library. How can I move a Sharepoint website from one location to another?

 

A SharePoint website is not actually moved from one location or server to another location or server. Instead, it is backed up to a file and then re-creates the content or website from the backup file.

The "Backup and Restore" feature in Office Sharepoint designer 2007 is the best way to move a single website or sub-website from one server to another, but this method has restrictions, as described above. "Backup and Restore" function (not"Remote website"Command) is the preferred method to copy a Sharepoint site from one location to another.

Office Sharepoint designer 2007's "publish" feature ("Website"Menu,"Remote website"Command) does not support moving all types of SharePoint content. For example, when you publish or copy a website from one location to another, office Sharepoint designer 2007 cannot move Web parts or Sharepoint list data and Architecture (that is, columns, settings, and content of SharePoint lists and libraries) in the Web parts area ). In contrast, the "Backup and Restore" feature does not support moving these SharePoint contents.

 

Back up website

 

 

The backup website creates a content migration package or. CMP file. When backing up a website, you can back up a top-level website or any sub-website. The backup files you create include list or library content, security settings, user information, navigation, custom and personalized information (such as views, website templates, and content types ). Backup files do not include workflows, notifications, and attributes stored at the website set level.

To back up a website, you must have administrator privileges for the website, but you do not need to have administrative access to the server running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

1. In"File"Click"Open Website".

   A temporary backup file must be stored in the backup website. By default, Office Sharepoint designer 2007 uses the current website. You can use another website on the same server or a location on another server on the same network, such\\Server Name\Share Name.

7. In"Save files"In the dialog box, select the location where the. CMP file is to be stored.
8. In"File name"Box, enter the name of the file, and then click"Save".

   If the website you want to back up or restore is large, the process may last for a long time.

PromptTo check whether an error exists during the backup process, you can check the. log file .. Log files are stored in the temp folder of your user account. If the last backup or restoration log file already exists, the new log file will be created using another file name, such as smigrate_1.log and smigrate_2.log. Restore a website

 

 

Step 1: Create a blank website as the target website

 

1. In"File"Click"New".

   You can restore the website to another server and restore it to a new top-level website or a sub-website under an existing top-level website.

4. Click"OK".

The method for backing up a sub-website is very wrong. However, the most common method is the following. The main purpose of writing this method is to find it in time when you need it.

The backup and recovery of the stsadm.exe command is completed at the website set level and cannot be performed separately for a website.

The Operation Command of stsadm.exe is connected to the-O parameter. There are three operations in backup/recovery:

Enumsites: list all website sets on the specified virtual server.

Backup: backup of the website set.

Restore: resumes the website set.

The command to list the website set on the server is as follows:

When backing up and recovering a website set, the parameters are as follows:

-URL: the URL of the website set to be backed up/restored.

-Filename: Path of the backup file.

-Overwrite: Optional. Overwrite existing backup files or website sets.

The command to restore a website set is as follows:

When using this command to back up and restore a website set, you should note that the website URLs before and after the backup should be consistent; otherwise, the website cannot be restored normally.

This backup and recovery can contain security settings or personal information. This command is applicable to the backup and recovery of the complete website set. In addition, this method can forcibly overwrite existing sites without the need to create a new site and then apply it.
